Description:
Meinung is a famous Hakka Village in Kaohsiung County, Taiwan. The traditional skills of making oilpaper umbrellas were first brought to Meinung by craftsmen in 1924. To date, this tradition has been handed down to their 5th generations. The symbolic meaning of Meinung’s oilpaper umbrellas: As “paper” and “son” are homophones in Chinese, paper umbrellas are given as dowries to symbolize a blessing for women to “give birth to a son soon”. Paper umbrellas also help to keep away evil spirits and bring good fortune.
