ABSTRACT

Mind the Gap
Malingering is probably the most pejorative title a Doctor can give a patient, it challenges the very nature of the doctor-patient relationship and can provoke strong emotions in the treatment team.

Dr Stoner will discuss the concept of malingering within the broader category of factitious disorders talking about specific cases of malingering within the alcohol and drug field and compensation based assessments. Based on his clinical experience he will discuss techniques to determine warning signs of when a person may be malingering. The importance of personality assessment and the concepts of why a person is presenting will be emphasised together with hidden agendas that a patient may have. The subject is an uncomfortable one for medical practitioners who are trained to assess, treat and help a person. There will be plenty of time for discussion and questions at the end of the talk.
