Interprofessional education (IPE) occurs when members of two or more professions learn with, about and from each other in a manner intended to improve teamwork and patient outcomes. It has been suggested that IPE may play an important role in the reduction of medical error and the associated risk to patient safety through development of coordinated patient care. The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to the overarching principles of IPE, and guide them in applying the concepts discussed to their own field of teaching. We hope to attract delegates with a wide range of backgrounds to establish a dialogue involving multiple different health professions – including medicine, veterinary, dentistry and nursing, among others. We will consider a broad range of interprofessional relationships, from both within and outside each field, and explore how they may be meaningfully incorporated into education programs.
