Disaster and Emergency Management (DEM), is vast and complex. Volunteer firefighters are responsible for the majority of responses to disaster events and routine emergencies in many areas of the Nation. The volunteer fire service is a shinning example of the accomplishments of volunteerism, however, membership is declining. Chief Pottruffs' exploratory research has identified specific motivational factors that will increase long-term retention of volunteers and lead to increased organizational resilience. DEM that is effective and sustainable requires a holistic management paradigm focused on increased volunteer retention. Chief Bill Pottruff will share successful innovative strategies leading to doubling his Department's membership in 10 years.
