Vaping and Current Drug Trends in Teens: Where Are We Going Now?
Current research into the substance use and abuse of youth indicates there is both good news and bad news. In one nationwide study, illicit drug use, other than marijuana, had reached the lowest levels in the past two decades. That's the good news. The not so good news revealed an increase in usage of certain drugs, and a real decline in the perception of risk from using a number of substances.
The Surgeon General officially declared e-cigarette use as an "epidemic" among our youth in December of 2018. Surveys, research and the practical experience of school staff and agency personnel attest to the extraordinary growth of vaping among teens and pre-teens. While there has been a years long lowering of tobacco use among youth, that trend is in danger of being reversed with the significant numbers of youth consuming nicotine via vaping. In addition to vaping, we will also examine current drug trends among youth. This workshop will:
--Look at the latest research addressing vaping, substance use and abuse among youth;
-- Examine current trends;
-- Discuss the impact of vaping on youth;
-- Look at prevention programs and resources for schools and agencies
