This presentation will highlight the fundamentals of Open Standards and Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) that all BIM teams should be aware of. When you are planning to use of BIM on any project, the stakeholders involved may not all use the same software applications. To ensure that project data is not lost in translation between applications, all team members should be knowledgeable about interoperability. The “BIM Handbook” by Eastman, Teicholz, Sacks, and Liston states “Interoperability is the ability to pass data between applications, and for multiple applications to jointly contribute to the work at hand. Interoperability, at the minimum, eliminates the need to manually copy data already generated in another application.” One of the best methods for ensuring interoperability is to understand and implement open BIM standards that are developed and maintained by an international consortium known as buildingSMART. This session will explore this topic with IFC on practical project examples.

Learning Objectives:

         • Identify the fundamentals of Open Standards
•Describe the Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)
•Examine the importance of using IFC on a project
•Demonstrate how to implement open BIM standards
