StudentTECH Junior: Earth Science and Engineering for Upper Elementary School Students!
Monday 07/24/2017 - Friday 07/28/2017
Class meets at the University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Dr. from 9:00 am - 2:30 pm.
California occasionally erupts
into flames and we have to understand the challenges. Wildfires and roads may
not seem to be related but fighting wildfires is dependent on getting access to
backcountry areas. The roads that firefighters use in natural areas are often
just made of dirt. That is a problem because dirt roads unless they are
engineered correctly tend to wash out during heavy rainstorms.
Road building is an art based on
science and engineering skills. Students in this course will learn about dirt,
soil, and sediment: how soil forms and its composition (weatheriing and
organics); how it moves (erosion); and where it settles (deposition). They will
learn about slope, watershed, and drainage and the importance of native
vegetation for erosion control.
Course fee: $265.00. All StudentTECH Junior courses include a StudentTECH Junior t-shirt in Youth size medium and Large. Don't forget to indicate your t-shirt size during registration.
PLEASE NOTE: StudentTECH Junior class hours are 9:00am- 2:30pm. Parents signing up additional siblings for classes sixth grade and up may drop off your StudentTECH Junior student at the earlier drop off time. You may also pick up your StudentTECH Junior student at the later pick up time. Just let us know!
