Clergy Ethics in the Virginia Conference

Keeping our churches and communities safe is our responsibility

The Virginia Conference lifts up two required training events for all first-time appointed clergy and lay professionals: Ethics 101: Sexual Ethics and Ethics 102: Clergy Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect.

Ethics 101: Sexual Ethics
An introductory workshop on the unique needs of clergy and religious professionals engaged in United Methodist ministry exploring concepts of how to maintain healthy boundaries along with issues of access, power and control, vulnerability, and transference. An orientation to our conference policy on sexual ethics and the process utilized for seeking reconciliation and resolution upon the occasion of boundary violations is also explored.

9:30 am - 3:30 pm at the Virginia United Methodist Conference Center, Glen Allen
$15 registration fee includes lunch
0.5 CEU will be given at the conclusion of the training event

Clergy beyond their first year of appointment (you have already completed Ethics 101) do not need to repeat it;; however, are required to attend "The Minister as Moral Theologian" with Dr. Sondra Wheeler, during this quadrennium. More information can be found on that training site.
