DIVERSITY - A KEY FEATURE OF CONFERENCE PROGRAM

The program for the Together Making Change Conference is rich and diverse. It has been planned so that stakeholders across multiple sectors and diverse communities have an opportunity to come together at this critical time in Australia’s response to elder abuse. A feature of the program is the work done by Samantha Edmonds and her team at the National LGBTI Health Alliance, Silver Rainbow.

Recently we spoke with Samantha Edmonds, Manager of Silver Rainbow Ageing and Aged Care Projects at the National LGBTI Health Alliance. In her work with Silver Rainbow Samantha provides national coordination and supports activities to promote the well-being of LGBTI elders and the ongoing delivery of LGBTI awareness training to create an LGBTI inclusive aged care sector across Australia.

Not being recognised in the aged care system and lifelong issues of discrimination and exclusion were cited by Ms Edmonds as key issues for older LGBTI people, with many of these people being fearful of whether they will be safe, accepted and recognised in aged care.

“We have to recognise that the aged care system does not acknowledge LGBTI older people and that LGBTI older people do not want to engage in the system that has discriminated against them for their whole life,” she said.

Ms Edmonds discussed how LGBTI older people are often sidelined in discussions regarding elder abuse, and that the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference will be a good starting point to change this.

“There are some really specific issues that LGBTI older people face, and these don’t always get caught up in general discussions around elder abuse, or in general responses to elder abuse, or they’re not actually seen as elder abuse in the same way that other abuses are seen,” she said.

“The Elder Abuse Conference is a really great starting point to start these discussions around the impact of elder abuse across diverse communities. These discussions need to happen to start driving that change and to start driving the next steps that’ll happen after the Conference.”

At the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference Ms Edmonds will facilitate LGBTI Communities: A Unique Experience of Elder Abuse panel at 3:50pm on Monday 19 February.
