ELDER ABUSE PREVENTION IN ABORIGINAL COMMUNITIES 
Join a panel of people working in Aboriginal communities on responding to elder abuse. Hear their creative responses and have a yarn after the presentations.

A
boriginal Community Services (ACS) is the largest aged care service provider for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders in Adelaide and South Australia, providing a full continuum of aged care services. ACS has a Community Visitor Scheme that provides visitors to socially isolated Elders. Aged care services and support are provided in Adelaide and the APY lands in the far north of SA, to approximately 500 Elders.

Graham Aitken (right) is the Chief Executive Officer of ACS. Prior to this, Graham worked for over 15 years with various Commonwealth and State Government Departments and programs specifically designed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. In his last position in Government, Graham was responsible for the administration and funding for all Aboriginal HACC services and programs across South Australia. Graham completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Adelaide's Flinders University as a mature aged student with majors in International Business and Human Resource Management and a minor in Business Economics. Graham was born in Oodnadatta in SA far north and his family are Yankunytjatjara. Graham has a passion and commitment to ensure that during the current Aged Care Reforms, all Elders have access to reliable and consistent aged care services, no matter where they might live.


PODCAST FROM BARBARA O'NEILL

Barbara O’Neill (right) is a Dunghutti woman born on the Gadigal Country of the Eora Nation. She is currently working as an Aboriginal Support Worker at the Junction Neighbourhood Centre (Maroubra). ‘Untold Stories’, her DVD and presentation at the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference, provides a unique perspective on the impacts of ageing on Aboriginal people. It draws on research done through her recently completed Post-Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Trauma Recovery and Practice at Wollongong University. Currently Barbara is completing a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling at the Australian College of Applied Psychology.

OUR CONFERENCE AMBASSADOR - SUE PIETERS-HAWKE

We are very pleased to welcome Sue Pieters-Hawke as our Conference Ambassador. Through her lived experience caring for her mother, Sue became an “accidental advocate” and is now known throughout Australia for her expertise and passion in the areas of dementia, positive ageing, care, and community. “This Conference brings much needed attention to the overlooked issue of elder abuse. Australia needs to take urgent action on this issue”, said Pieters-Hawke. Dementia is known as a factor for increased risk of experiencing elder abuse. Sue brings her knowledge and experience of dementia, ageing and older people’s rights and her public profile to Ambassador for Together Making Change. With her heartfelt commitment to the community, in the lead-up to the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference Sue will work with us to bring attention to the issue of elder abuse throughout Australia.

MCLE AND CPD POINTS

Some sessions may be appropriate to attract Mandatory Continued Legal Education (MCLE) points for Lawyers for professional development. Solicitors should make their own assessment of whether the session meets their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements, and maintain their own records for meeting CPD requirements according to their jurisdiction or Law Society requirements. CPD requirements for other professionals may also need to look at their own profession’s obligations and requisites
