Featured in this edition - Public and Patient Involvement - Are We Listening?

The value of public and patient involvement (PPI) in the design and conduct of health research and healthcare delivery, is being increasingly recognised as an important ‘success enabler’ by governments, health services, research funders, translational researchers and the broader community. Although many clinicians, managers, policy makers and researchers are well aware of ‘patient centred care’ as a guiding principle and the health consumer viewpoint of ‘nothing about me without me’, the risk is that lip-service only could be paid to PPI and cultural change within both the research and healthcare communities may be minimal and slow.

T
his session will explore the value and the challenges in delivering high quality PPI across both the research and the healthcare sectors. The session commences pre-lunch with ‘the patient and public perspective’. Leading consumer advocates and experts in PPI across a variety of domains will speak on the evidence supporting PPI and strategies to enhance PPI in identification of research priority areas, in research study design, in evaluation and roll-out of research outcomes and in health systems design.

Post-lunch the recently formed Australian Health Research Alliance (AHRA  - Chair, Prof Helena Teede photo right), an Alliance of the seven NHMRC accredited Advanced Health Research and Translation Centres (AHRTC) and the two NHMRC accredited Centres for Innovation in Regional Health (CIRH), will present a national vision for the AHRA broadly and for the AHRA program to enhance PPI in research across Australia.

Via Art

Art is many things to every culture. In the words of Ellen Dissanayake:

“Art is a normal and necessary behaviour of human beings and like other common and universal occupations such as talking, working, exercising, playing, socializing, learning, loving, and caring, should be recognized, encouraged and developed in everyone. Via art, experience is heightened, elevated, made more memorable and significant.”

SPHERE 2017's Via Art will focus on multisensory, interactive and participatory artworks to support and complement the Symposium program. Composer and audiovisual experimentalist Dr Robin Fox, artist and musician with a doctorate of psychology Dr Michaela Davies, along with performers from NIDA will deliver world class premiere performances intertwined with the Symposium proceedings.

Dr George Khut’s Mobile Mood Lab and 'Soundscape' by Lightwell can also be experienced.
