5th National Elder Abuse Conference

Only THREE Weeks Until Opening

Seniors Rights Service is delighted to be hosting the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference — Together Making Change. The Conference comes at a critical time in Australia’s response to elder abuse.

Frontline workers from service agencies and communities know that elder abuse — in all its forms — continues to make increasing demands on the responses already in place.

In 2017 the Australian Law Reform Commission handed down its report and recommendations after its national inquiry into elder abuse and there were several high-profile systemic elder abuse cases within aged-care settings that received significant media attention. This led to a number of government sponsored inquiries.

All the while various social research indicates that the prevalence of elder abuse in Australian society is at least 5% — that’s at least 182,000 older people from across our families and communities that are directly impacted. Without a national prevalence study we do not know the detail of the national picture… the story might be much worse.

We need to work together — across multiple sectors — to ensure we build on our existing work and respond to the systemic issues highlighted in recent public inquiries and similar exercises. We need to be advocates for change. Join over 500 delegates who each have a passion to create change in 2018.

ANNOUNCEMENT: SUE PIETERS-HAWKE CONFERENCE AMBASSADOR

We are very pleased to welcome Sue Pieters-Hawke as our Conference Ambassador.

Through her lived experience caring for her mother, Sue became an “accidental advocate” and is now known throughout Australia for her expertise and passion in the areas of dementia, positive ageing, care, and community. “This Conference brings much needed attention to the overlooked issue of elder abuse. Australia needs to take urgent action on this issue”, said Pieters-Hawke.

Dementia is known as a factor for increased risk of experiencing elder abuse. Sue brings her knowledge and experience of dementia, ageing and older people’s rights and her public profile to Ambassador for Together Making Change. With her heartfelt commitment to the community, in the lead-up to the 5th National Elder Abuse Conference Sue will work with us to bring attention to the issue of elder abuse throughout Australia.
