Stellar line-up of international and national speakers
You won't want to miss the chance to hear from this year's impressive line-up of global and national influencers in higher education. The 2016 Higher Education Conference has assembled one of the strongest programs in recent years.

In the opening keynote address, former Dutch Education Minister Jozef Ritzen will frame the challenges and opportunities for Australia's university sector in an era of intense global competition. He will look at what makes our system both a social and economic success - and the risks that must be managed carefully in the years ahead. He'll also draw on international data on the relationship between economic growth and the quality of university education to make a powerful case about why universities must take the initiative and shape future policy.

Professor Ritzen is one of the world's longest serving Education Ministers, with a record of driving major reforms to the Dutch education system during his nine years in the portfolio. He went on to serve as a Vice President for Human Development at the World Bank and as President of Maastricht University. He is now a member of several international advisory boards of universities, senior adviser to the International Institute of Labor Studies IZA in Bonn, and a senior adviser to RAND Europe, an independent not-for-profit research institute that seeks to improve policy through research and analysis.

Dr Simon Easson is Global Manager of Education Solutions at IBM and joins Professor Jo Ritzen in the plenary session Transforming Australia: universities, innovation and relevance.

Dr Eassom joined IBM in 2005 after 22 years as a lecturer, researcher and university senior executive in the UK. As a teacher, trainer of teachers, and an awarded Teacher Fellow he has always been a leader in the use of technology to enhance learning, teaching and assessment and promote innovation and change. As IBM's subject matter expert for HE and its global offering manager for education in IBM's Smarter Cities business unit, he is responsible for designing and developing technology solutions for enhancing student experience, improving recruitment and retention, and aligning programs with industry requirements. He has led the application of IBM's cognitive computing platform (Watson) for the education sector.

Professor Carl Wieman of Stanford University joins The University of Newcastle's Professor Peter Radoll and Charles Darwin University's Professor Sharon Bell in a panel discussion on STEM education - chaired by The Australian National University's Professor Brian Schmidt.

Carl Wieman holds a joint appointment as Professor of Physics and of the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University. He has done extensive experimental research in both atomic physics and science education at the university level. He served as Associate Director for Science in the Office of Science and Technology Policy in the White House in 2010-12. Professor Wieman has received numerous awards recognising his work in atomic physics, including the Nobel Prize in physics in 2001 for the first creation of a Bose-Einstein condensate.

Ms Annabel Crabb is back this year for our closing plenary session Agile advocacy in a time of austerity. Mr Mark Textor, Managing Director and Co-Founder of C|T Group joins her again, along with Ms Catriona Jackson, Chief Executive Officer of Science and Technology Australia.

Ms Crabb is one of Australia's most beloved journalists. She is the ABC's chief online political writer, writes a weekly opinion column for Fairfax, is the author of the bestselling book The Wife Drought and is a sought-after speaker and presenter.

As host of the ABC's enormously popular series Kitchen Cabinet, Ms Crabb has broken bread with Australia's most influential political leaders and shared her magnificent desserts in kitchens around the country which has led to the release of her new book co-written with Wendy Sharpe Special Delivery - Favourite Food to Make and Take.
