LTC Health Hacks

Overview

In partnership with Hacking Health, an organization that facilitates idea generation for healthcare innovation, teams from member homes will have the opportunity to participate in OLTCA’s first ever Design Jam.  

The Design Jam is a unique and interactive hands-on workshop that provides participants an opportunity to collaborate with like-minded innovators. It provides the opportunity for event participants to learn new techniques and tools typically known as design thinking.Design thinking is an approach to solving problems based on the concept that solutions should be created with and not just for users. 

The OLTCA Design Jam aims to catalyse collaboration between multidisciplinary groups of participants to craft out-of-the-box solutions for long-term care. 

This exclusive event is available free for up to 8 member home teams to participate. Registration opens Wednesday, October 4.  

Who Should Participate? 

OLTCA invites member homes to register a team to take part in the Design Jam event.  

The team should ideally be made up of 6-8 participants:  
  • Residents and/or family members (min 2)
  • Owner/operator/senior management (min 2)
  • Care delivery staff member(s) (1-2)
  • A hacking health facilitator will also join your team at the event (OLTCA to assign) 

Why Should We Participate

Learn, foster, and innovate. Design thinking is an approach to solving problems based on the concept that solutions should be created with and not just for users. Each user is an expert of their own experiences. Their knowledge, insights, and points of view will shape the development of products, services, and solutions of which they are the ultimate benefactor. 

Winning Prize

At the end of the event, the team that develops the best idea / solution will be awarded a prize of $1,500 to the first place winner, $1,000 to the second place winner and $500 to the third place winner for their Resident’s Council to spend.

What Should We Prepare In Advance? 

There is no preparation to do before the Design Jam. We expect that you come with an open mind, ready to share your experiences and collaborate, hear and be heard, and stay positive.

Attendees are encouraged to think about key challenges or problems that you are currently grappling with in your LTC home. However, time will be allocated on the agenda for team members to identify, discuss and prioritize issues.
 

What Is Involved in Participating?

Let the ideas flow, so that people can build on each other and foster great ideas. You never know where a good idea is going to come from.

Use “and” instead of “but”. Being positive and building on the ideas of others is harder than you think, so challenge yourself.

Encourage pie in the sky thinking. Wild ideas can often give rise to creative leaps. In thinking about ideas that are wacky or out there we tend to think about what we really want without the constraints of technology or materials. We can then take those magical possibilities and perhaps invent new technologies to deliver them.

Eligibility to Participate and Other Information ·

  • Must be an OLTCA member home in good standing.
  • Teams must include:
    o Residents and/or family members (min 2)
    o Owner/operator/senior management (min 2)
    o Care delivery staff member(s) (1-2) ·
  • The first 8 teams to successfully submit their completed application form will be accepted. Teams will be notified of their status on Friday, October 20.
  • OLTCA will not provide reimbursement for travel and accommodations.
  • Involvement at this session does not include complimentary conference registration. If you are interested in attending any other aspect of This is Long Term Care, please click here to register.
  • The session room is wheelchair accessible.
  • We are happy to accommodate additional persons attending to support resident participants
