In March 2015 Australia’s first property crowdfunding platform was launched.  Within one month, the first residential housing project in Australia was successfully crowdfunded. Overseas, developers in China have already raised a record $806 million through a global crowdfunding campaign. Is crowdfunding set to revolutionise the way Australian developers finance new projects?  As individuals become more in control of their financial decisions, disruption of the consumer finance and banking sector has incredible implications for the property industry. Whether through carefully curated neighbourhoods with cafe precincts, urban breweries and pop-up retail stores or through the grassroots tactical urbanism movement, the irresistible allure of social interaction is king, aka the ‘bump factor’. Andrew Hammonds, Director of Placefocus, leads a discussion on social trends, their influence on liveability and their implications for developments.
