Managing Principle Consultant of Defensive Consulting
Secureworks
I am currently a managing principle consultant of Defensive Consulting at Secureworks. I initially joined Secureworks as a consultant in 2012, and subsequently joined Secureworks as a full time employee in August of 2017. I first got noticed in cybersecurity through his BBS in the Pacific North West, prior to the passing of the The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) in 1984. In my role at Secureworks, I have been given the support and opportunity to develop a line of business around my work in DevSecOps. In this role, we advise executive management on strategic cybersecurity planning. As a result, we craft custom cybersecurity policies, procedures, and plans that are aligned with the unique business strategies and capabilities while qualitatively improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their information security management programs. In my previous role at Secureworks I advised businesses on web application security best practices, where I helped to prevent the State of California from potentially hundreds of millions in potential fines in PCI-DSS violations in addition to financial losses from hackers who I learned through infraguard had target the state retirement pension funds. As a result, I was able to provide the state of California with the information necessary to thwart the implicit risks, and have the web application rewritten at no cost, in order to meet the necessary legal and security requirements. Prior to Secureworks Dennis has been honored to have worked with or for number of boutique cybersecurity companies such as SchwartauHaus, the United States Cybersecurity Consequences Unit (USCCU), Strategos Security, Neoprime, Security Innovation and Computer Network Defense (CND, UK). The following is a sample of the work I am most proud to have participated in professionally: • Selected as 1 of 12 Judges of the US Cyber Security Challenge for 2017 • SME to Qatar consulting on nation-state level cyber security • SME to NationWide building society, resulting in lowest banking fraud in the UK • Co-Inventor of AntiXSS, the default input/output encoder for ASP .NET v5 • Co-Inventor of IBM AppScan • Co-Author of IBM Redbook in SOA Security I have always been a very active member and sometimes vocal member of the security community, I have been a contributing member of DefCon since its inception. Subsequently, I co-founded the Open Web Application Security Project (OWASP) in 2001, and announced it at DefCon in 2002. This was followed by becoming a co-founder of DevSecOps in 2012. My work is cited in over 180 government and academic institutions around the globe; in addition to being used as a de-facto industry standard. Dennis Groves holds a Master of Science in Information Security from Royal Holloway at the University of London.
