- Opening KEYNOTE: Mike Saks
Research Professor
University Campus Suffolk, UK
Dr. Mike Saks has served on the Executives/Boards of six universities in the UK, including as Provost/Chief Executive. He currently holds Visiting Chairs in Health Policy at the University of Toronto and the University of Lincoln. He has received several international academic awards and published widely on professions and the healthcare workforce, including over a dozen books. He has been a chair/member of many National Health Service committees in the UK and a long-term adviser to governments and professional bodies on the regulation of health and social care – last year receiving the Best Brains Exchange Award from Health Canada and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for his contribution to federal government and the provinces and territories on scopes of practice.

 
- Closing KEYNOTE: Deborah Kimmett
Deborah Kimmett has been in the humour business for 30 years. This Second City alumna enjoys a busy speaking career and travels across North America addressing organizations on the positivity and creativity in change. She appears regularly on CBC Radio’s Debaters, DNTO, and LOL as well as the Winnipeg Comedy Festival. 
She is the author of 3 books and 5 plays: one nominated for the Governor General award. Her film Guarded, (about a female prison guard) is currently in development with CFC (the Canadian Film Centre). Deborah is the architect of the Seven Minute Writer e-toolkit and holds regular online classes coaching writers to 'stop procrastinating and write already'. Because of her special interest in health care and hospice work, she recently produced a compassionate video for caregivers called, Walk a Mile in My Backless Gown.

With over 20 years health care experience Kelly has worked in multiple settings - hospital, pharmacy, in home and community support; crossing all sectors - public, private and not-for-profit. She has held senior management and consulting roles in operations, organizational development, quality, communications and governance. She completed her masters at Royal Roads University specializing in leadership studies, and organizational effectiveness, and has undergraduate degrees from University of Toronto and Seneca College.

 
Catherine Brookman

Catherine is a consultant with 30 years’ experience in health care organizational management, partnership exploration, program development/evaluation, research, knowledge dissemination and translation. Catherine is a dynamic authority on Ontario’s Personal Support Worker (PSW) occupation with extensive expertise in gerontology specializing in the development and evaluation of services for seniors.

Catherine is working with University of Waterloo CRE-MSD, the Aphasia Institute, St. Clair West Services for Seniors and McMaster University as a co-investigator for the Ministry of Labour funded PSW health and safety research project. She holds a Doctorate, Masters and Bachelor of Science degrees.

 
Angela Brown

Angela has worked as a nurse in Scotland, in home care in Ontario with several different organizations, and is a Certified Congenital Deafblind Specialist with DeafBlind Ontario Services. In her role as Facilitator of Community Services, Angela is involved in developing and delivering training within DeafBlind Ontario Services, and for other organizations. Angela uses her creativity, skills and experience to motivate others with good humour and enthusiasm.
At DeafBlind Ontario Services, we believe with a helping hand and supportive touch, individuals who are deafblind can increase their independence on their own terms. Founded in 1989, DeafBlind Ontario Services provides Intervenor, residential and other specialized services to individuals who are deafblind. With residential locations and community services programs across the province, our services extend into a wide range of communities in Ontario. Through respect, trust and teamwork, we are providing leadership in deafblind awareness, training, programming and services. Tilak Dutta
Scientist and Team Leader - Home, Community and Institutional Environments Team
Toronto Rehabilitation Institute - University Health Network
Tilak Dutta is a Scientist at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute-University Health Network and leads the Home, Community and Institutional Environments Team. Tilak completed his PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2012 at the University of Toronto focused on preventing back injury in caregivers. He is listed as an inventor on a number of patents including one for the design of a pneumatic patient lifting device called SlingSerter. Tilak’s current work includes the development of tools to measure the risk of injury in people’s homes as well as new methods to coach caregivers to prevent injuries.

 
Yusuff Falola

Yusuff Falola is a personal support worker. He worked in a group home with people with developmental disorders before he joined Saint Elizabeth 4 and half years ago. He has been in this field for more than 8 years and also works with people with Spinal cord injury.

 
Laurie Graham

Brain Injury Services
Laurie Graham has been the director, residential services with Brain Injury Services for the past 10 years. Working closely with the agency’s clinical team, she has successfully directed a cultural shift of the 
model of care in residential services with passion and skill. Her expertise is directly related to her hands 
on experience at all levels of program design and implementation. She has been a front line staff, case 
manager, program manager and is currently a member of the leadership team. 

Laurie has been the chair of the agencies ‘therapeutic relations’ committee since its inception in 2000! This committee explores areas of the client staff relationship to provide on-going training opportunities that raises self-awareness and professional growth for front line employees.


 
Lynelle Hamilton

Lynelle Hamilton has presented over 600 workshops and has published "Becoming a Personal Support Worker", the first Canadian textbook on personal support.  Lynelle coordinates Capacity Builders' PSW certificate training program and provides customized in-service training to PSWs.

Dr. Paul Holyoke is Director of the Saint Elizabeth Research Centre which has an extensive applied research portfolio across four main themes: integrated care, person and family centred care, end of life care, and caregivers.


 
Emily King

Emily King is a PhD candidate at the University of Toronto and Toronto Rehabilitation Institute – University Health Network. Her goal is to improve safety and independence in home care. Emily’s doctoral research has focused on identifying tools and techniques for preventing injuries during assisted bathing and toileting. Emily is also heavily involved in the design of assistive devices – she holds multiple patents and has contributed to the development of assistive technologies for toileting, mobility and safe patient lifting.

 
Hillarie Klass

Hillarie Klass provides occupational health and safety consulting services to the health and community care team of the Public Services Health and Safety Association. She has extensive experience in the field of health and safety. Prior to joining PSHSA, Hillarie held positions as industrial hygienist, health and safety officer and safety inspector. She has a Bachelor of Science in Biology, a Master of Science in Occupational Health and Safety, and a Teaching Certificate in Adult Education. She has had direct accountability for the design, development and implementation of health and safety programs and training.

My name is Caleigh McCabe and I have worked for Mills Community Support for just over 3 years. I started working as a PSW for Assisted Living Program while going through school to become a Registered Practice Nurse. I have recently graduated Nursing and continue to work causally for the agency. Within Mills Community Support, I also work for Developmental Services Department. I have most recently taken on the role of Friends and Fun Coordinator for Mississippi Mills for both seniors and adults with disabilities. I thoroughly enjoy working in the community I was born and raised in.

My name is Jenni McGrath and I have worked for the mills for four years, and have had the privilege to work with the Assisted Living Program as well as the developmental services the Mills offers. I have such an appreciation for the ongoing person centred supports that the company provides. I am a person centred planner and help coordinate the Friends and Fun program the Mills offers. I love to help others and take such enjoyment in helping people direct their own lives and supports.
 
Kim Miller

Kim Miller has been employed within Community Health Nursing for the past 18 years, the last 17 of which have been spent with Saint Elizabeth. Kim completed both her undergraduate and graduate education at the University of Windsor, in Southwestern Ontario. Her current position is Program Lead: Education Services, which includes developing and coordinating external educational services at Saint Elizabeth. Kim has led multiple national clinical portfolios, including general medical, medications and infusion therapy.

 
Claudia Morris

Claudia Morris has been employed in community health for 8 years, beginning as a community nurse, then in her current role of Personal Support Supervisor. She studied at George Brown College and continues to take courses. Currently supervising in the North York area with Saint Elizabeth, she continues to liaise with clients, families, CCAC, PSW’s, nurses, OT’s, PT’s to provide exceptional care to clients in their homes and support the staff who assist them.

 
Kath Murray

Life and Death Matters
Kath Murray is a certified hospice palliative care nurse, educator, thanatologist and founder of Life and Death Matters. Her mission is to develop resources that help Personal Support Workers provide excellent care for the dying and their families. Kath’s newest book, ‘Integrating a Palliative Approach: Essentials for Personal Support Workers” was written specifically to address the needs of Personal Support Workers. She is currently working on a new text which she says is a text for Practical Nurses and a Practical Resource for Registered Nurses. 
Kath’s book and workbook can be ordered from Amazon or from Life and Death Matters. And their FREE resources are available at www.lifeanddeathmatters.ca - including PPTs, videos, podcasts and blog. She also has a Life and Death Matters facebook page. 
Kath Murray believes that education and resources must be engaging and practical. She weaves current knowledge, research and best practice with personal experience and anecdotes to bring the material to life. She is known for synthesizing material into easy-to-understand language and conveying it with warmth and humour.

 
Nancy Naylor

Nancy Naylor is the Associate Deputy Minister, Delivery and Implementation at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC), leading two large divisions: Health System Accountability and Performance (HSAP) and Health System Quality and Funding. Nancy joined the MOHLTC in 2014 as Assistant Deputy Minister of the HSAP Division.  
Before joining the MOHLTC, Nancy was the ADM of the Postsecondary Education Division in the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities. She has also served as an ADM in the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance and has held other senior positions in the Ontario government.

 
Clem Pelot

The Mills Community Support Corporation
His current position is Director of Community Supports and Services for Mills Community Support, which provides residential support to 51 adults with developmental disabilities in Almonte and Smiths Falls.

Clem is also responsible for Seniors Services at Mills Community Support, including Assisted Living and Respite for 60 seniors and Home Support services to 600 seniors.

Before starting with Mills Community Support in June 2013, Clem had spent his career in the recreation field:
          •    20 years at the City of Gloucester, ten as Director of Recreation and Culture
          •    12 years as a management consultant following the 2001 municipal amalgamation

GTA Regional Elder Abuse Consultant, and Provincial Multicultural Coordinator
Elder Abuse Ontario
Monita Laura Persaud is the GTA Regional Elder Abuse Consultant and the Provincial Multicultural Coordinator for Elder Abuse Ontario. In that role, she works on an initiative by the Provincial Government called the Ontario Strategy to Combat Elder Abuse. Monita has held this position for more than 10 years. Monita has also worked in the domestic violence and child welfare sectors for more than 15 years in the Jane-Finch community both as a social worker and a manager. She has done extensive policy development work in the areas of anti-discrimination and anti-oppression on behalf of the United Way by developing and training boards of directors of United Way member agencies on cultivating and nurturing organizations that supports and promote inclusion and diversity. Monita has also presented at numerous provincial and national conferences on elder abuse in Canada. Monita taught at Humber College and Centennial College for the Community Worker Programs as well as Ryerson University with the Department of Gerontology and the Department of Social Work. Monita possess a master in social work from the University of Toronto and an undergraduate degree in Economics and Political Science from Queens University. Her most rewarding and challenging job to date is being the mother of twin boys who are currently teenagers. In her free time, Monita likes to read, watch shows on national geographic and the animal channel, and listen to classical music.


 
Lisa Sever

Lisa is a pharmacy graduate of University of Toronto and has completed her hospital residency at St. Joseph's Healthcentre in Hamilton. She is a Certified Geriatric Pharmacist. She has been involved in medication safety in home care initiatives which include a home visiting pharmacist program, examining medication incidents in home care and developing best practice guidelines for medication management. She wants to ensure patients are using medications that make sense and hopes to help keep patients safe from preventable adverse drug events.
