Hazel Brewer

Hazel specialises in shipping, offshore and international trade matters. Hazel also advises on a broad range of issues arising under charter parties, contracts of affreightment, transhipment contracts, bills of lading and on carriage issues relating to petroleum products, iron ore and minerals, and soft cargoes including sugar, rice, grains. 

Her offshore practice includes contract advisory work and handling contentious matters arising under rig, drilling unit and offshore support vessel and services contracts, including anchor handling, seismic, drilling and geotechnical contracts. 

Hazel also has extensive experience in advising on commodity sale and purchase contracts, including iron ore, minerals, petrochemicals and soft commodities. She advises parties on contract form and content and on disputes arising in relation to performance obligations. Hazel is dual-qualified in Australia and England & Wales.
 
Phillip Cable

Phillip Cable is a director and co-founder of MAST Ltd. Phil’s experience and background has given him an exceptional understanding of the sector's specific insurance, legal and security requirements and he has been instrumental in the growth of MAST.

Phil’s early career after leaving school at 16 was as a marine broker in the Lloyds of London Insurance market which led to him to return to education and graduate in Law following which he commenced training as a Solicitor. 

Phil decided; for reasons he is still unable to explain, that the call of the sea was too great and he left a career in law and was commissioned into the Royal Navy where he served for six years as a Warfare and Diving Officer before returning to the Private Sector.  He then completed a Master’s Degree in Maritime Law before founding MAST in 2005 with his business partner Philip Batty who previously served for 18 years with the British SAS.

He has been instrumental in the growth of the business and its development into one of the leading maritime security companies in the market.
 
Justice Steven Chong
Singapore Supreme Court
Justice Steven Chong graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1982. He entered into legal practice with one of Singapore’s top law firms, Drew & Napier, that same year. He eventually became its Joint Managing Partner at the end of 1997. In 1998, Justice Chong joined another leading Singapore law firm, Rajah & Tann, where he eventually became its Managing Partner. In January 1998, he was also appointed Senior Counsel. In private practice, he was regularly featured in The Best of the Best Guide to shipping and maritime lawyers of the world. 

Justice Chong was a leading commercial lawyer and has been involved in numerous landmark cases. He was also a senior member of the Singapore arbitration community and participated in various arbitrations, both as counsel as well as arbitrator. 

After 27 years in legal practice, Justice Chong was appointed to the Supreme Court on 1 October 2009. During his judicial term, he presided over a wide range of cases and delivered significant judgments covering diverse areas of the law. Justice Chong assumed office as the Attorney-General of the Republic of Singapore on 25 June 2012 for 2 years. On 25 June 2014 Justice Chong returned to the Bench.
 
Professor Martin Davies

Professor Martin Davies is Admiralty Law Institute Professor of Maritime Law at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans, Director of the Tulane Maritime Law Center, and Professorial Fellow at Melbourne Law School, Australia. 

He holds the degrees of M.A. and B.C.L. from Oxford University, England, and an LL.M. from Harvard Law School. Before joining Tulane, he was Harrison Moore Professor of Law at The University of Melbourne in Australia and before that he taught at Monash University, The University of Western Australia and Nottingham University. He has also been a visiting professor at universities in Italy and Singapore. 

He is author (or co-author) of books on maritime law, international trade law, conflict of laws, and the law of torts. He has also published many journal articles on these topics. He also has extensive practical experience as a consultant in maritime matters and general international litigation and arbitration, in Australia, Singapore, and the USA. He has advised on cargo claims, arrest and admiralty matters, drafting bills of lading, sea waybills and charterparties, collisions and limitation of liability, oil pollution, salvage, marine insurance, maritime arbitrations and international sale of goods.
 
Chris Edwards

Prior to joining the Singapore office of Hill Dickinson LLP as a Partner in June 2014, Chris Edwards was a Partner at another leading maritime law firm in Singapore where he has been based for over 19 years.

Chris has extensive experience in handling marine claims, particularly “dry” shipping disputes and marine insurance coverage issues. He also advises upon insurance policy wordings.  In addition, Chris handles trading disputes and has experience of arbitration under the LMAA Rules as well as arbitration in Singapore.  He acts for a wide spectrum of clients who include ship owners and operators, P&I Clubs, companies trading and purchasing commodities, charterers, insurance and reinsurance companies, Lloyds Syndicates in Singapore and marine inspection companies.  He is well versed with market practice and the issues which most commonly arise in South East Asia.  Where appropriate, he liaises with correspondent lawyers many of whom he has known for a considerable period of time.  He has recently been involved with the “COSTA CONCORDIA” wreck removal, where the Singapore office of Hill Dickinson acted for the salvors, Titan-Micoperi.

Chris was voted one of the Top Ten Legal Personalities in the maritime industry by Lloyd’s List for 2011 and 2012 and is named as a leading individual in Chambers Asia Pacific 2015 where is described as someone who has amassed a wealth of experience having spent two decades in shipping litigation and who regularly handles marine insurance work.

Peter Malpas

Peter Malpas started his working career joining the British Merchant Navy as an Engineering Officer serving onboard refrigerated cargo vessels and a product tanker. On leaving the sea, he decided to attend University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) in Cardiff, where he successfully gained a BSc. (with honours) in Maritime Commerce. On graduation, he joined Fairplay Publications in London, into the role of Data Manager and following the merger between Fairplay and Lloyd’s Register’s information department in 2001, he was promoted to Director of Information. Peter migrated to Australia in 2006 and took a position as a Researcher for Braemar Seascope to support clients. In July 2011, he became responsible for the Perth office. Subsequently in July 2014, Braemar Seascope merged With ACM Shipbrokers to create Braemar ACM Shipbrokers. His main role is to support Braemar ACM’s clients and brokers with a macro perspective of the dry cargo market by which to make more informed medium and long term decisions.

Mark North

Mark North started a career in shipping serving 5 years at sea as Navigating officer on bulk, container and gas trades before completing written exams for Chief Navigating Officer certificate of competency.

He returned ashore to spend 5 years working as Protecting and Indemnity Club correspondent in South Africa as Marine Manager with P&I Associates who represented all IG group Clubs. During this time he completed his Masters of Maritime Law (LLM), and became a Member of International Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS) after completing their written exams. He immigrated to Australia in 2007 and started working for Thomas Miller in Sydney as claims executive before immigrating over to Western Australia.

Mark has been working for Owners Mermaid Marine in Oil and Gas, and as a ship broker in both the Sale and Purchase and Dry Bulk markets.

Thurlestone Shipping are a privately owned ship brokerage focussed solely on the dry bulk and sale and purchase markets.

Thurlestone operate in London, Monaco, Singapore, Melbourne and Perth with a team of about 100.

 
Pat Saraceni

Pat Saraceni is a member of the Clifford Chance global litigation and dispute resolution team. She focuses on complex commercial litigation, arbitration and mediations with a specialty in maritime and shipping related commercial matters. Before joining Clifford Chance Pat was a partner in one of Australia’s leading maritime firms. She regularly appears as counsel in court, mediations and in arbitrations. Pat is a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has lectured in Shipping Law and Constitutional Law at the University of Notre Dame. She currently tutors Civil Procedure at the University of Western Australia, is on the Board of the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (MLAANZ), and chairs MLAANZ’s Western Australia branch.
 
Kerryn Webster

Kerryn Webster is a Senior Associate at Wilson Harle, a specialist commercial litigation firm with an established international trade and maritime law practice. 

Kerryn has extensive experience assisting clients across a broad range of litigation and dispute resolution matters. Her experience is mainly in civil and commercial matters, with special expertise in international trade and maritime law.
