Event Description

Welcome to Maribor, Slovenia
The European Capital of Arts 2012

Welcome to the
2019 European COPA Migration!

For their 17th European Migration, COPA members, Cirrus pilots, and their friends and families, will be flying to Maribor, Slovenia, LJMB.

The European Migrations traditionally visit a new country every year – so far we’ve flown to Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England (twice), France (twice), Germany (twice), Greece, Italy (twice), Jersey, Holland and Spain. Depending on where our members live, sometimes it’s in their backyard, but mostly quite some XC flying is involved – including crossing the Alps and/or the seas.

After having been in Italy last year, the 2019 Migration is again more far away in the south - about five hours flight time from England with a Cirrus. And more and more, COPA members from the USA and other continents are joining, many of them flying in commercially, some hitching a ride in a Cirrus for the last couple hundred miles, to fly-in in style. Our European migrations get more perfect every year and become unforgettable events.

Maribor - Slovenia

Maribor is the second-largest city in Slovenia and the largest city of the traditional region of Lower Styria. Maribor was selected the European Capital of Culture for 2012, along with the Portuguese city of Guimaraes.

On the Drava River lies Maribor Island (Mariborksi otok). The oldest public bath is located there, a much visited place in Maribor.

There are two hills in Maribor: Calvary Hill and Pyramid Hill, both surrounded by vineyards. The latter dominates the norther border of the city. Ruins of the first Maribor castle from the 11th century and a chapel from the 19th century also stand there. The hill offers an easily accessible scenic overlook of Maribor and the countryside to the south over the Drava River.

Many historical structures stand in Maribor. Of the remains of city walls surrounding the old downtown, the most prominent are the Judgement Tower, the Water Tower, and the Jewish Tower. Maribor Cathedral was built in the Gothic style in the 13th century. Maribor Synagogue was built in the 14th century, and is the second oldest synagogue of Europe. Today, it serves as a centre for cultural activities. Other Prominent Medieval buildings are Maribor Castle, Betnava Castle, and the ruins of Upper Maribor Castle on Pyramid Hill. Town Hall was constructed in the Renaissance style, and the Plague Column in the Baroque style.

Contrary to the US Migrations, which are centered on the vendor exhibitions and presentations, the Europeans prefer daily excursions to historic landmarks and into nature. Slovenia has everything to offer - mountains, woodlands, hot springs, vineyards, world famous caves and cave Castles, and more!

While you read this, the planning committee is still working out some remaining details, but the general plan is finalized! Please see the "Itinerary" tab for more details.
