2:00 pm - 4:00 pmExecutive Roundtable: The New Data Center Reality

No doubt, your core data center capabilities are rock-solid.  But at what point does utter solidity – and rigidity – begin to work against enterprise efficiency?  Surely, solidity is needed on matters of security.  There's no room for anything else.  But does that solidity make it difficult at times to adapt to changing user and customer requirements?

In the data center context, ask yourself if your core communications capabilities have been confronted with demands from cloud computing deployments, or moves toward always-on social-networking models, or the unrelenting rush to accommodate any device, anytime, anywhere?

The solution: introducing elasticity to what historically have been rigid, buttoned-up and locked-down data center architectures.  Without compromising security, putting in place elastic infrastructures helps control costs; ensures user and customer satisfaction, and increases overall enterprise agility by allowing when-needed, how-needed access to communications services.

Join CIO contributing editor Lou Bertin and Cisco Systems at a roundtable discussion where we'll address how building elasticity into core data center models allows enterprises of any size to accommodate continually evolving (and continually escalating) demands without sacrificing core strength, security or overall performance.

8:00 am - 8:15 amWelcome and Opening Remarks
A preview of key topics, ideas and highlights for the 2011 CIO Leadership event.
8:15 am - 9:15 amLeading Through Crisis and Times of Great Change

Throughout the course of his 40-year career with the Coast Guard, Admiral Thad Allen’s no-nonsense leadership style and competency has won him the respect of senior government leaders as a man who confronts challenges by capturing and focusing the passion, energy and efforts of diverse stakeholders and helps them achieve common goals. Most recently at the center of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, to which he was appointed by President Obama to lead the country’s efforts in cleaning up the spill, Allen believes that leadership starts with bringing people together, agreeing on goals and creating a unity of purpose that can solve seemingly intractable crises. In times where the extraordinary is becoming more ordinary, Allen helps audiences understand the importance of preparation, preventative readiness and ensuring that you can manage a crisis before it hits your business.

9:15 am - 10:00 amA Technology Company with Wings: Transforming the Future at United Airlines

When United Airlines CEO Jeff Smisek talks about the world’s largest airline becoming a “technology company with wings,” CIO Keith Halbert knows that his marching orders are being spelled out at the highest levels of this $23 billion business. The U.S. airline industry drives more than $1 trillion in U.S. economic activity, yet it’s lost nearly $60 billion and shed more than one-third of all airline jobs in just the past decade. So the challenges United faces are daunting on every front. Now more than six months post-merger with Continental Airlines, the massive work is under way to evolve the carrier into a “real-time, event-driven, predictive” business. In this compelling presentation, Keith will talk about the process of building a strategic IT roadmap for United’s future, and about the transformational leadership skills CIOs must hone in order to establish business credibility and “executive presence” across the C-suite.

10:00 am - 10:30 am Next-Generation Networks and the Evolving Data Center

Today's data centers stand at the epicenter of powerful technological and economic trends. Just as other core areas of the IT organization are evolving to meet the demands of an Internet-enabled world, networks must prepare to make a significant leap forward into cloud computing. By rethinking traditional legacy approaches, it’s possible for businesses to refresh their data center networks to offer greater economies of scale, improved application service levels, simpler management and even lower costs. In this Q&A interview with Mike Rose, former CIO of Royal Dutch Shell and now EVP of Service, Support and Operations for Juniper, you'll hear some in-the-trenches advice on the most critical steps IT organizations need to take now to meet the coming wave of data center challenges.

11:00 am - 11:40 amTechnology Strategy Workshops

Attendees choose between two different topics in these fast-paced, intimate workshop breakouts hosted by our Leadership Event sponsors. Each facilitated discussion will focus on the top strategic challenges and opportunities associated with game-changing technologies, processes and services. The goal is to identify new leadership approaches, discuss proven best practices, and solicit peer advice for getting the most out of these technology solutions.

11:00 am - 11:40 amThe Business Impact of IT Consumerization
Mobility and server virtualization are top priorities for CIOs in the year ahead, according to CIO magazine's most recent Tech Poll. Introducing these technologies presents many challenges and implications, and CIOs must deal with the key issues associated with these transitions. Join us in this workshop-style session with Juniper Networks as we explore these issues in small-group discussions from a variety of angles, including the best ways to maximize the benefits of virtualization, deal with integration and operational challenges, manage the influx of consumer devices into the business and more.
New Ways to Manage Change

CIOs can't just be IT leaders—they must also be experts in managing people and change. It is both an exciting and daunting time in our business world today as the pace of new technology adoption accelerates. Join our workshop-style session with Cognizant to talk about how you are staying on top of this ever-important issue. In small-group discussions, we will be exploring a variety of topics such as how to address privacy concerns in the cloud, approaches for transitioning employees to virtual collaboration models, and managing consumer devices for corporate benefit.
11:45 am - 12:30 pmCloud Considerations: Business Drivers, Governance Strategies and Reality Checks

The speedy transition of cloud computing from last year’s buzzword to this year’s reality has surprised even the most skeptical CIOs. On the positive side of the cloud ledger are cost savings, speed of implementation and user acceptance. On the negative side are concerns about data security, integration and vendor management complexity. As the demands of the virtual workplace grow, many businesses are using cloud-based software, services or infrastructure to enable mobile strategies or launch unified communication capabilities. In this wide-ranging panel discussion with the CIOs of Microsoft, Coca-Cola Bottling, Underwriters Laboratories and Marquette Group, you’ll hear how the wide variety of cloud options are changing the way today’s technology roadmaps are being designed. Our panelists will also talk about how governance structures are evolving, how private vs. public clouds are being evaluated and how the CIO role is changing as a result.

12:30 pm - 1:30 pmExecutive Women’s Luncheon and Discussion
Women CIOs will have the opportunity to network and discuss critical leadership issues for executives and senior leaders at this special luncheon. Sponsored by Juniper Networks and hosted by the CIO Executive Council.

Houston-based Waste Management, Inc. has 22 million customers, 45,000 employees and 1,200 locations. The CEO’s goal is to “know more about our customers and how to service them better than anyone else in our industry.” So the CIO’s mandate is to establish customer intimacy by enabling new forms of customer communication, as well as providing full transparency to waste collection and processing data all along the supply chain.

In this case scenario-based workshop, Waste Management CIO Puneet Bhasin will present the business goals, IT strategy and top challenges for a specific initiative. Attendees in small workgroups will address his questions and develop strategic proposals for Waste Management, with an emphasis on leadership practices and pitfalls. Workgroups will then share their proposals with the audience and receive feedback from the CIO.

As the world’s largest direct seller of beauty products and the fourth largest global cosmetics company, Avon Products has a valuable 125-year legacy known as the “Avon Lady.” But this channel of 6.2 million representatives has its challenges, and IT is central to addressing such issues as reducing turnover, helping acquire new customers and retaining customers stranded by turnover. To tackle these business imperatives, IT had to transform itself from a service provider to an engine for growth. In this compelling inside look at an iconic brand, CIO Donagh Herlihy will talk about turning the IT organization into an engine for growth and a driver of new business capabilities through intelligent ordering, social networking and community-building.

Following up on our opening keynote, this practitioner panel will delve into the leadership challenges of the increasingly mobile enterprise. As more of your employees come to work equipped with smart phones and other consumer devices, how should CIOs be managing the transition to running critical business apps in these less secure environments? How do you influence the business value proposition for these technologies, envisioning and promoting innovative use beyond supporting basic apps? Given the business imperative of collaborating internally and externally, what is the best approach to take toward risk management and data security? In this wide-ranging discussion, moderated by Pam Stenson, our expert CIO panel will share their practical experiences, ideas and advice.

10:30 am - 11:15 amBreaking Up is Hard To Do: Leadership Lessons from a Conglomerate Split

The impending split of industrial giant ITT into three separate multibillion-dollar companies creates a unique set of leadership opportunities and challenges for CIO Carol Zierhoffer, who is leading not only the separation of the IT organizations but also the standup of financial shared services. At just three months into the plan to separate into defense, water and industrial manufacturing businesses, Carol will share her leadership approach and lessons learned so far, particularly on the delicate and critical people side. How do you redirect an IT organization that’s been working diligently to build single-instance global systems and processes into a three-way split structure? How do you energize your employees about the personal leadership opportunities the split affords while allaying their concerns about an uncertain future? In this compelling presentation, Carol will talk frankly about the upsides and downsides of leading a once-unified team down three separate paths.

11:20 am - 12:00 pmOvercoming Cloud Challenges: A Cisco Workshop

From roaming access to always-on service, cloud technologies create a host of opportunities for businesses. But there are also new technical, cultural and security challenges that must—and can—be addressed. In this workshop-style session with Cisco, explore stories of the barriers CIOs have encountered while seeking to make cloud a valuable solution instead of a costly disappointment. And join in the small-group discussions to share the creative ways you have overcome these challenges to bring new benefits to your company and your customers.
Business Agility and the Economics of Cloud Computing

While the cost benefits of cloud are well understood in the industry,  CIOs are having a difficult time getting a true fix on the business value cloud can offer beyond cost reduction.  Join VMware’s Vice President of Global Solutions Marketing Cornelius Willis for an insightful discussion about how IT executives can harness the opportunities presented by hybrid cloud computing to forge a link between cloud, IT agility and overall business expectations.
The Power of Yes: Integrating Consumer Devices into Your Business Operations

As consumers get their hands on smarter devices and applications, they are excited to bring these technologies to work -- and they expect IT to support them. Employees are coming into work with much higher expectations of IT. They want better devices, greater freedom, faster uninterrupted service and more options than ever before. These growing expectations put increasing pressure on IT to provide compelling solutions for their end users while maintaining a secure, well-managed environment. In this session, a Microsoft expert will discuss how you can help your business navigate these new workplace realities and support the business in embracing consumerization responsibly.

12:00 pm - 1:15 pmLuncheon
1:15 pm - 2:15 pmThe Global Paradox: The Pitfalls and Politics of Leading IT on a Worldwide Scale

As business has gone global, so too has the domain of today’s enterprise CIO. But leading global transformation brings about a whole new set of challenges and obstacles. How do you measure the overall success of the global organization? How do you drive innovation from the edges and not only from the center? How do you manage the political implications of “globalizing” when country leaders are used to running their own IT shows? And most importantly, how can you keep operations running smoothly and morale high amidst natural disasters and political disruption? The CIOs taking part in this lively discussion of global challenges for IT organizations will share what it takes to establish and grow business, deploy IT and lead operations around the world.

2:15 pm - 3:15 pmSeizing Business Opportunity: Three Micro-Case Studies

Three CIOs will present brief case studies on new initiatives to grow their businesses while pushing the envelope on today’s hot technologies. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and probe the decisions made and the strategies behind the approaches employed by these CIOs.

Clorox CIO Ralph Loura developed and is applying a transformation model -- based on communities of practice -- that is retooling IT talent to better leverage the changes coming in a cloud-oriented world.

AAA CIO Brent Stahlheber has deployed cloud-based collaboration technology to enable members to access destination-specific expert travel agents in any location from AAA office to their own homes.

Quintiles CIO Richard Thomas is growing a significant new technology business as he transitions his organization from cost to profit center - providing a cloud based platform called Infosario that is used to power Quintiles biopharma and healthcare customers operations.

3:15 pm - 4:30 pmThe Quest for Depth: Building the Leadership Bench

The lack of leadership depth on the IT staff is the top hurdle in advancing the strategic impact of IT and the role of the CIO as a business executive. Research shows that this situation is getting worse rather than better. In this expert panel and workshop hosted by the CIO Executive Council, you’ll hear a cross-disciplinary perspective on how we can to solve the problem and then work in cross-generational groups (current CIOs and Ones to Watch winners and Pathways program participants) to dig into specific approaches and strategies for shoring up and developing your leadership bench strength.
