International Road Transport Union - IRU

Every item on every store shelf, in every office and home, has been on a truck at one point.  Trucks are the lifeblood of all economies efficiently interconnecting all businesses, markets and transport modes. However, non-harmonised procedures change from one country to the next creating long border waiting times - an economic and social nightmare for Customs and businesses alike. Fortunately, there is a global, multimodal, secure and affordable solution called TIR, which cuts overall transport times by 40% and costs by up to 30%, and is fully compliant with the WCO Safe Framework.

Ratified by 68 countries, the United Nations TIR Convention has proven most effective for 60 years in 58 countries worldwide. Under TIR, any containerised shipments are sealed and unsealed by Customs at departure and final destination, eliminating redundant checks at borders in between. The IRU, as the global voice of the road transport industry with over 65 years experience in facilitating and securing trade, has been mandated by the United Nations to manage TIR.

Thanks to state-of-the-art risk management apps developed by the IRU, TIR is now highly computerised and is the only truly global Customs transit system in the world guaranteeing the full security and traceability of goods transported.

Swinnus

The World Customs Organization (WCO) has served as an international customs community which is in charge of developing international conventions on customs and international trade facilitation. Its work is now expanding to the establishment of safety and security in the logistics supply chain and customs modernization.

As well, since the 911 terrorist attacks, the demand for solutions that can meet the global regulations on logistic security and safety such as the US SAFE Port Act has been ever increasing.

In line with such trend, POSCO ICT and S-WINNUS jointly has developed a solution that can track and monitor container freight in every step of the logistics process including ports around the world. It provides a customized service to a wide range of logistics companies and government agencies.

In particular, the National Customs Service of Korea plans to adopt this solution in order to check the location and seal of C/S (Customs Selectivity) freight in real-time.

Major features of the container tracking and monitoring services include:

  • Provide real-time monitoring of container seal and location information
  • Identify the status inside (temperature and humidity) and impact value of containers
  • Authorize removing seal on containers using NFC technologies
  • Support GSM/WCDMA that can adapt to each country’s communications environment
  • Adopt large-scale batteries that require no recharging throughout the entire logistics process

The demand on the services provided by the two companies is expected to increase as the installment of security devices on all US-bound container freight will become mandatory.
