Bio
Tan Cheng Guan is responsible both for business development and for driving the expansion of
Sembcorp Industries’ energy and water businesses globally. Mr Tan joined Sembcorp in 1990,
bringing with him a broad range of experience in strategy, business and project development
within the utilities industry. He pioneered the early development of the Group’s utilities business
on Jurong Island and drove the business’ expansion into China, the UK, the Middle East and India.
He also led Sembcorp’s acquisition of Cascal’s global municipal water business. Previously, Mr Tan
was managing director of Vopak China, based in Shanghai (2004 to 2007), and prior to that, he
spent 12 years in engineering and project management for the oil and gas sector at Brown & Root
Far East, working in London, Kuala Lumpur and Miri, Sarawak. Mr Tan holds a Bachelor of Civil
Engineering (Hons) from the University of Liverpool, UK and completed the Advanced Management
Programme at Harvard Business School.
