The Roads & Transport Directorate and Local Government NSW is again this year hosting the Local Roads Congress and Congress Dinner.

WHEN: Monday 4th June

WHERE: InterContinental Sydney

THEME: Roads as Critical Infrastructure

FACILITATOR: Award Winning Actor and Writer, Mr Rob Charlton

PANEL SESSION: Councils as Road Authorities and Critical Infrastructure Managers

DINNER SPEAKER: Mr Greg Aplin MP

Some of the Speakers and Topics:

The Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey will highlight the funding programmes currently providing assistance to Local Government and the positive outcomes being delivered. She will also highlight the Road Safety Plan 2012 and outline State Government Programmes directed at implementing its targets.

President of LGNSW, Clr Linda Scott will open the Congress and highlight the level of funding being provided by the NSW Government and draw attention to the need for focus on funding and delivery of the Local Government Road Safety Programme.

Shadow Minister for Transport and Roads, Maritime and Freight, Ms Jodi McKay will provide a view of the current state of play from the alternate government point of view with particular reference to the levels of funding being provided and the need to take decisive action to reduce the worsening road toll in NSW.

Dr John Crozier from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons will expand on the article by Dr Tony Joseph in the Sydney Morning Herald on 25th January 2018 titled: The National Road toll: what can be done? The Australasian Trauma Society is calling on all levels of government to support the systematic implementation of the Safe System approach to Road Safety to decrease the national road toll.

The various topics covered in this year's program (link below) will touch on relevant and topical issues for Rural, Regional and Metropolitan Councils. These challenges will only be actioned through discussion, education, advocacy and ongoing and sustained lobbying by many within Local Government banding together and speaking with one voice.

The NSW Roads Congress provides a forum for Mayors, Councillors, General Managers and Senior Engineering staff to have access to Ministers and Senior State Government staff to discuss and address these issues. It is a once a year opportunity to meet together under a local government banner to push for additional road funding. It is also a great opportunity to catch up with the latest developments and issues in roads and transport.
