Sustainable Access on a Safe Road Network

Speaker

Description
The worsening road toll in NSW, particularly over the Christmas holiday period, confirms the need to adopt a new paradigm for the management of our road network.

All levels of government must commit resources to a comprehensive implementation of the safe systems approach to network management.
This approach must include:
  • Improved data collection to enable better allocation of resources,
  • Improved ongoing funding for infrastructure maintenance, renewal and improvement,
  • Promotion of safer vehicles,
  • Endorsement of the introduction of autonomous vehicles,
  • A wider commitment to speed enforcement, and
  • Better education and assessment of drivers and general road users.
Additional resources might be obtained from a reduction in the current health budget attributable to road trauma of $30billion (Australia wide) and development and introduction of a road user charging model across the country.
