| Bethan Hazell Bequests and Estates Manager Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation Gifts in Wills are a significant source of income for Peter Mac, making up around 30% of all funds raised for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. As Bequests and Estates Manager, Bethan leads a small team in the solicitation and stewardship of bequest donors. She also administers over 150 Estates each year, including contested Estates and those with other legal issues. Bethan is an advocate for taking a proactive stance in contested Estates to honour the donor’s wishes and maximise income for Peter Mac’s life-saving cancer research. | |
| Merrilyn Julian Head of Bequests The University of Melbourne Throughout its 164-year history, Gifts in Wills have been fundamental to the University of Melbourne’s development, with many buildings, professorial Chairs, scholarships and bursaries established through the bequests of the University’s founding fathers and mothers. The University is also one of the largest trustees of charitable trusts in Australia, with over 1,000 charitable trusts established largely through bequests, and with a capital value of approx. $745 million. Endowed gifts and bequests support many thousands of students through scholarships and bursaries, and a wide range of other University purposes such as research programs, staff fellowships, facilities and publications. | |
| Kelly Morgan Senior Associate Barker Henley Kelly has in excess of 14 years professional legal experience in complex estate planning, administration and litigation. Having acted on behalf of high net worth individuals, large corporate companies and charities, Kelly has successfully managed cases involving the maintenance of ongoing trusts, recovery of bequests, resolving un-administered estates as well as seeking variations to trusts effected by legislative changes. She has also acted in criminal prosecution and defence matters, on a variety of offences, including appeals to the Court of Criminal Appeal. In addition, Kelly has also lectured at the School of Law at Western Sydney University. In her role as Senior Associate with Barker Henley, Kelly leads our estates practice and is driven to make a positive contribution to the circumstances of her private, corporate and charitable clients, focusing particularly in the areas of trusts, estate planning, estate administration and litigation, associated transactional matters as well as criminal matters. | |
| Martin Williams Bequest Planning and Retention Manager Australian Red Cross Martin has managed the administration of the national bequest program at Australian Red Cross for the past eight years. He has encountered a variety of administrative and legal issues affecting the receipt of bequest entitlements and working closely with Red Cross’ legal unit, he has attended mediations arising from contested estates in various states. He believes that it is important that charities share examples of both challenges and best practice in estate administration to ensure that every generous donor's final wishes achieve their greatest potential. Prior to joining Australian Red Cross, Martin worked for 15 years in estate administration in law firms and trustee companies. | |
