VIC - Gifts in Wills Special Interest Group: Legal/Estate Administration Panel Discussion

This Special Interest Group will be a panel discussion focused on estate administration and legal issues surrounding gifts in Wills. Take this chance to hear from our panel of speakers from three different charities and a member of the legal community. There will also be lots of opportunities to share your insights and ask questions.

Speakers
Bethan Hazell
Bequests and Estates Manager
Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation

Gifts in Wills are a significant source of income for Peter Mac, making up around 30% of all funds raised for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre. As Bequests and Estates Manager, Bethan leads a small team in the solicitation and stewardship of bequest donors. She also administers over 150 Estates each year, including contested Estates and those with other legal issues. Bethan is an advocate for taking a proactive stance in contested Estates to honour the donor’s wishes and maximise income for Peter Mac’s life-saving cancer research.

Merrilyn Julian
Head of Bequests
The University of Melbourne

Throughout its 164-year history, Gifts in Wills have been fundamental to the University of Melbourne’s development, with many buildings, professorial Chairs, scholarships and bursaries established through the bequests of the University’s founding fathers and mothers. The University is also one of the largest trustees of charitable trusts in Australia, with over 1,000 charitable trusts established largely through bequests, and with a capital value of approx. $745 million. Endowed gifts and bequests support many thousands of students through scholarships and bursaries, and a wide range of other University purposes such as research programs, staff fellowships, facilities and publications.

Working closely with the University’s legal office, Merrilyn leads a small team in the solicitation and stewardship of bequest donors, and in Estate administration. Much of the bequest team’s work involves negotiating with supporters of the University who wish to leave an endowed gift in their Will, the establishment of perpetual trusts through bequest or planned gift (a mix of inter vivos and testamentary giving), and the resolution of contested and other legally complex Estates.
