The collapse of an athlete during competition presents a puzzle requiring a review of systems, a differential diagnosis, a review of regional head and neck anatomy, laboratory tests and pharmacology. Once pieced together, acute vertigo is often the culprit.

Objectives:
Learn to describe the possible reasons for acute vertigo.
Understand the interplay and importance of the middle ear and eustachian tubes in equilibrium and balance.
Learn about the neuroanatomy involved in dizziness.
Identify the drugs used in the treatment of acute labyrinthitis.
