Fully integrating tooth whitening into the dental practice requires that dental assistants understand available bleaching materials, their effects and aspects of proper protocol in order to provide safe, effective and successful treatments to patients. This knowledge enables these valuable team members to consider issues like the concentration or percentage of the bleaching agent, whether in-office or take-home treatments are appropriate, and whether bleaching is required prior to other restorative treatments when helping to determine which option will be the safest and most efficacious for patients. This course reviews key aspects and characteristics of the tooth whitening process that will enhance the dental assistants ability to perform these treatments.

Objectives:
Identify considerations that affect whitening treatment decisions.
Explain the types of active whitening agents found in tooth whitening products.
Describe how whitening products work to remove tooth stains.
Discuss factors affecting whitening treatment patient selection and protocol.
