Our nation is facing a drug crisis, with a significant contribution coming from prescribed opioids. The dental profession must provide patients with proper pain control without contributing to the epidemic. This course will review the basics of prescription writing, safeguarding prescriptions and pads, and how to properly dispose of unused or expired prescription medications. The course also will review our ethical obligation to watch out for drug shoppers and how to properly use the prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) in your state or region. Alternatives to opioid prescriptions for pain management will be explored. The proper use of Narcan (Naloxone) in cases of suspected drug overdoses will be discussed.

Objectives:
Understand the various controlled drug classes and dentistry's role in proper prescription writing.
Discuss how to safeguard yourself from being the victim of prescription fraud.
Be knowledgeable in your responsibility in using the electronic health record PDMP.
Be prepared if you witness a suspected drug overdose.
