This interactive section will discuss treatment options and scenarios when local anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide fail to provide effective pain and anxiety control, or when a patients medical history (such as cardiovascular disease, dementia, anxiety and diabetes) dictates altering the course of care. A panel of American Dental Board of Anesthesiology diplomats will discuss situations in which patient management fails outside the traditional treatment box. Participants are encouraged to share their own case scenarios.

Objective:
Discuss options for pain and anxiety management in situations where local anesthesia and nitrous oxide alone are ineffective.
Understand how to handle special situations when a patients medical history dictates an alteration in pain/anxiety and medical management.
Learn when it is appropriate to refer a patient if the situation surpasses your level of sedation certification.
