Optimal wound care aims at maximizing functional restoration as well as optimizing the esthetic result. The selection of suture material in implant, periodontal and oral surgery is important due to the unique characteristics of the oral cavity. All aspects of suturing will be discussed, including the advantages and disadvantages of different suture types, sizes of suture material, needles, instrumentation and how to achieve tension-free closure and primary intension healing for predictable healing outcomes.
