Description: The often under-utilized concept of Implant Assisted Removable Partial Dentures (IARPD) will be reviewed. Multiple cases will be shown which highlight the different clinical procedures, materials, and attachments used. By utilizing strategically placed implants, the biomechanical (support, stability and retention) and esthetic concerns of conventional RPDs are improved. While simple in theory, IARPD treatment requires a comprehensive understanding of implant therapy and mastery of removable prosthodontics. IARPDs must utilize materials and components that can distribute forces between teeth, implants, and soft tissue. The use of IARPDs has been a major growth area of my practice. Demographics suggest that previously fully edentulous seniors are now only partially edentulous.

Learning Objectives:

  • Attendees will leave with an appreciation of the advantages and disadvantages of implant assisted removable partial dentures (IARPD).
  • Various case studies, each describing a different problem with a conventional RPD, is overcome by adding one or more strategically placed implants.
  • Difficulties of treatment planning partially edentulous patients will be discussed. These include a patient’s financial circumstance, time willing to invest, oral anatomy, esthetic concerns and the emotional challenge of removable teeth.
