Description: The era of Periodontal Medicine has been introduced to both medical and dental communities as well as the general population.  This presentation will summarize the evidence relating periodontal disease to several systemic diseases including diabetes mellitus, atherosclerotic heart disease and stroke, respiratory infections and adverse pregnancy outcomes.  Special emphasis will be placed on the management of the diabetic patient. Treatment strategies that can positively impact the periodontal condition in patients with these conditions and potentially improve on systemic health will be discussed based on published studies and case presentations. Special considerations in the dental management of these higher risk patients will be emphasized.  The etiology, pathogenesis and medical management of osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis will be reviewed. The studies investigating a connection between these systemic disorders and periodontitis will be discussed.  The impact of dental and medical therapeutic strategies on these conditions will be presented.
