Steve Biggs started his career in Southampton Container Terminals in 1994 as a Docker and became a Union Rep in 1998. He is currently the Convener for Unite the Union in Southampton the Chair of the European Works Council for DPWorld and Chair of the ITF Dockers Section OSH Working Group.

Kate Blackford holds a Ph.D from the University of Bath in Organisational Psychology and has specialist interest in Safety, Health, Wellbeing and Quality of Working Life. Prior to joining Associated British Ports in July 2016, Kate had spent nearly ten years consulting internationally in Safety Culture improvement and more recently in Quality of Working Life. Kate sits on the Port Skills and Safety Management Committee advising on culture, as well as writing a monthly section on health and wellbeing for Student Life magazine. Kate has a thirst for continuous personal and professional growth and is excited to be commencing training in Neuro Linguistic Programming and Cognitive Hypnotherapy in April this year, adding to her already wide range of knowledge and applied practice in both organisational and individual growth and development.

Bill Brassington is an independent safety and security consultant  with over 15 years’ experience in the container industry, including time with P&O Containers and GE SeaCo Services. He is an active member of the ISO’s Technical Committee 104 (freight containers) where he now chairs the Sub-committee on special containers. He also attends the IMO DSC Sub-committee as an NGO technical expert and regularly participates in working groups involved with container safety and security. For the last six years Bill has provided consultancy to the container industry, covering not only the safety and security of the container, but also the cargoes carried. He is the author of the research study “Safety in the supply chain in relation to packing of containers”, published by the ILO in 2011, and edited the new IMO/ILO/UNECE “Code of Practice for Packing Cargo Transport Units (CTUs)”.
 
Capt. Richard Brough O.B.E.

Richard Brough started his career in 1969 with the Merchant Navy, culminating in command level. After 20 years at sea, he came ashore and worked in various port and stevedoring management positions until 2004, when he established his own port and logistics consultancy. From 2008-2011 he also launched, ran and sold UK Port Services Ltd. Richard took up the title of Head of ICHCA International last year and is deeply involved in the association’s work with various international agencies and regulatory bodies.
 
Stephen Cameron

Stephen Cameron trained at sea and ashore for 10 years, as a deck officer, navigator, and in line management with Cunard Cargo Shipping. He was then part of the start-up management that for 20 years successfully ran O.T. Africa Line (OTAL), a specialist West Africa focused liner shipping, logistics and terminal operations. As Operations Director he was responsible for OPEX budgets of $50 million. As a board member he was responsible for business development, and risk management. One of the keys to the company’s success, was the return on investment in staff, from focused training and mentoring. Stephen commenced CMR in 2001, a specialist consultancy focused on the Maritime and African markets. With a portfolio of 150 maritime ‘silver fox’ experts, CMR provides market research and due diligence studies, risk & post event consultancy, root cause analysis, change management and training, and experts for law firms, insurers, and dispute resolution.
 
Nic Ingle

International Dry Bulk Terminals Group
Nic Ingle is the Executive Director of the International Dry Bulk Terminals Group (DBTG), a unique membership organisation which represents dry bulk terminal owners and operators globally. He took up this role in 2016 after 5 years as commercial manager at the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in London. Nic started his career at a grain terminal in the UK, specialising in malting barley and milling wheat. He has a BSc in Maritime Business and Maritime Law and an MSc in International Shipping and Logistics from the University of Plymouth. He spent 12 years at the UK Department for Transport working in both the maritime and aviation divisions. In the maritime division he worked on the UK Tonnage Tax scheme and International Conventions, and in the aviation division he specialised in air cargo and in-flight supplies security training. The cargo security training he wrote was adopted by the European Union in 2010 and remains the European standard today.
 
Dermot Kerrigan

Dermot Kerrigan is co-director of Active Training Team, a company that uses immersive, multi-media techniques to create impactful safety leadership learning events. ATT are best-known for developing the multi-award winning ‘EPIC’ induction in partnership with the Thames Tideway Tunnel project in London. ATT has so far inducted 15,000 workers onto this major infrastructure project which is now in its fourth year.
 
Dr Panagiotis Stavrakakis

Panagiotis (Panos) Stavrakakis is the Business Lead for Organizational Health & Wellbeing at the Science Division of the Health & Safety Executive. Panos holds his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, a Masters in Disaster Medicine and Crisis Management from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, a MBA in Shipping from the ALBA Graduate Business School and a Bachelor in Marine Engineering from the Hellenic Naval Academy. Panos has served Hellenic Navy from 1989 to 2011 as a Naval Engineer Officer, initially as Chief Engineer in Surface Vessels and then in shore based roles as a senior Officer. His work in Hellenic Navy included engineering and operations management, damage control, CBRN Defence, health & safety, training and education and regional cooperation. Since 2011, Panos is passionately working in research and innovation in a wide variety of technologies. He collaborates with academia and industry into innovative ideas and projects. He is a fellow member of IMarEST, a Charterer Engineer and a Charterer Marine Engineer.
 
Richard Steele

Richard Steele is a safety and skills professional with a Masters in Training and Development who has been involved in the ports industry for 20 years. Prior to ports, Richard worked in the nuclear industry on safety and skills provision. Richard was the Learning and Development manager for Associated British Ports for 10 years and has led Port Skills and Safety for 9 years. Port Skills and Safety is a subscriber organisation for UK ports with a remit to share best practice, develop safety guidance and standards and produce qualification frameworks for the industry. PSS members handle 95% of total UK port traffic. We work with a network of stakeholders including the UK regulators the HSE and MCA, government, trade unions and the DfT to be a voice of the industry on health, safety and skills.
 
Sarah Tydeman

Sarah Tydeman began her career in Accountancy, before dedicating herself to improving the Safety Culture & elevating the role of Personal Protective Equipment in high hazard companies. In Sarah’s view, changes in working methods and safety exposures in the business and working environments make it imperative to turn the traditional model of PPE supply on its head. Partnering with Anchor, Associated British Ports have dispelled the notion that PPE can be treated as an overhead of relative unimportance. They are uniting their HSE plan, safety culture and risk mitigation measures through the design of a risk-based, cohesive and innovative PPE strategy. Having been promoted to the role of Chief Operating Officer of Anchor Safety in 2018 (coincidentally, also the Year of the Woman!) Sarah has also been closely involved with the development of workwear which is specifically designed to provide style and protection for females in the marine environment. In the process, Sarah has burnished the credentials of Anchor Safety as a leading Innovator in PPE design and solutions, both very relevant to the exciting ”Women in Maritime” Initiative.

Jennifer Webster is an Occupational Psychologist and works for HSE's Science Laboratory in Buxton. Jennifer works with many organisations both here in the UK and overseas to identify effective and targeted interventions based on their Safety Climate Tool data, that are designed to improve their safety culture. Jennifer is also developing a research programme for HSE to investigate the potential health and safety risks created by the use of new technology, new ways of working and changes to organisational structures.
 
Peter Wilkinson

Following 13 years at sea in the British Merchant Navy and after obtaining a Masters certificate, Peter Wilkinson moved ashore to work in Stevedoring operations. He established and ran a steel terminal operation and then ran roll on/roll off terminals for a number of years. A slight change in direction saw a move to health & safety management with the UK’s largest port operator, achieving a MSc in Occupational Safety & Health, becoming Group Head of H&S in 2014.

Terry Frith

Captain Terry Frith served at sea for 34 years, as an apprentice in dry bulk vessels to Master of chemical tankers. Following 19 years as Master in Command, he came ashore as Fleet Captain in a busy shipping office. In 2001, he joined CDI as Technical Manager reporting to 71 chemical companies responsible for the chemical industry’s global marine transportation and storage inspection schemes.

I have worked in the Ports & Logistics industry for over 30 years with the last 17 in Health, Safety & Environmental Management. I currently work for PD Port as their Group HSE Manager and have extensive experience in both Ports and Logistics operations. I am experienced in a number of areas such as, risk management, accident investigation and behavioural based safety, along with many years involved in training and development. I’ve also worked closely for many years with Ports Skills & Safety, working on the development of L148 Safety in Docks and the industry guidance document series Safety in Ports.
 
Peter Lahay

Peter Lahay worked in the British Columbia coastal marine towing industry for 12 years before coming ashore and taking on trade union duties. In 1993 he became an ITF Inspector for Vancouver. He then went joined the ITF Secretariat 1998 as Inspectorate Training and Development Coordinator. 2002 he returned to Canada and became national coordinator for ITF. During 2018 he has joined the ITF Dockers Section and is redeveloping the ITF Dockers OSH program.
 
Stefi McMaster

Stefi McMaster is a second year Psychology PhD researcher at the University of Hull. Stefi’s area of research is in Human Factors, specifically psychological fatigue. Her project focuses on understanding fatigue experienced by people working in extreme environments, specifically the wind energy industry and its management and prevention. She has spoken about fatigue at various academic and industry-focused conferences, such as Global Offshore Wind and the European Occupational Health Psychology Conference. Stefi holds a First Class Honours (BSc) in Psychology and has a wide range of work experience in the public and private sector. Prior to postgraduate study, Stefi worked for a psychometric test publisher and management consultancy firm and as a Higher Officer in the civil service.
 
Capt. Danny Millett

Daniel Millett is a Master Mariner with past command experience. He sailed as Master with Foreland Shipping Ltd. on their fleet of deep-sea Ro-Ro vessels, carrying containers, break bulk and standard/heavy tracked Ro-Ro cargoes. During his 14-year career at sea, Daniel served on various ship types including Ro-Ro, anchor handling tug supply (AHTS), dredgers and a bulk carrier. While at Brookes Bell he has carried of survey and opinion-based work, including container and Ro-Ro shift analysis. He has attended various high profile fire and shift of cargo casualties.

A director of the dangerous goods training and consultancy company LRT Ltd Les has been involved in the transport of dangerous goods for over 25 years. He has a degree in education and training and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT). His company has conducted training or consultancy work, both in the UK and abroad, for a number of organisations including; Total UK, Shell, Conoco, Murco, Phillips66, ABP, CdMR/Cobelfret, DFDS, DHL, Eddie Stobart, DB Schenker, Norbert Dentressangle, Ports of Felixstowe, Hull, Liverpool, Tyne and Shanghai ,The Potter Group, and TNT to name a few. Les is an active member of the Department for Transport Working Party on the Transport of Dangerous Goods and Secretary of the Dangerous Goods Training Advisory Panel (TAP). LRT Ltd is an approved ADR training centre and also has CAA approval for Dangerous Goods by Air courses. Les is currently a question setter for the Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser (DGSA) examinations and a member of the Scottish Qualification Authority (SQA) ADR course steering committee.

Merchant Marine Captain diploma at the French Merchant Marine School, Cedric Rousseau started his career on board passenger and roll-on/roll-off vessels as deck and engine officer. He joined the CMA CGM company in 2005 as deputy DPA/CSO with the responsibility of the implementation of ISM and ISPS code on board container vessels of different flags. In 2011, Cedric left the vessels management and created a department in charge of managing safety, security and environment of terminals managed by CMA CGM. Since height years, new activities were developped and recently inland platforms joined the department. Committed to provide the safer, secure, efficient, and environmental friendly places of work by implementing the best standards of the industry Cedric joined ICHCA ITP five years ago to participate to the continuous improvement of safety security and environment within our industry.

Javier Saavedra is the Head of the HSE Dept. of Terminales Maritimos de Galicia SL (TMGA). He oversees TMGAS’s main business located in the ports of La Coruna and Ferrol, NW Spain. Here it operates an environmentally friendly, ATEX dry-bulk cargo terminal; a project cargo terminal catering mostly to the windmill manufacturing industry. The terminal also operates as a multi-purpose terminal for containerized steel and heavy lift cargo, as well as engaging in general stevedoring work.
 
Daniel Sheard

Dr Daniel Sheard has been a partner at Brookes Bell since May 2001. Offering a scientific approach to damage, spoilage and deterioration, Daniel provides expert sampling, analysis and evidence for incidents involving a wide range of commodities carried at sea. He has many years of experience of investigating claims relating to wetting, self-heating, fires and other problems in bulk cargoes and with packaged goods.
 
Pete Terry

Pete Terry joined DP World Southampton (then Southampton Container Terminals Limited) in January 1999 as the Safety Manager, the security element was added to his role in 2004 following the implementation of the ISPS Code. Prior to joining DP World Southampton Pete was in the British Army for 23½ years with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, specialising in mechanical engineering.
 
Rachael White

Rachael White has spent 30 years charting the course of global freight logistics, shipping, transport, ports and cargo handling as a writer, editor, researcher, conference producer, communications consultant, community builder and influencer. As well as editing four industry trade journals and being involved in organising, moderating and speaking at over 100 industry conferences worldwide, she has acted as Secretariat CEO and Observer to the Board for ICHCA International, the global cargo handling NGO, and as Secretary General for PEMA, the Port Equipment Manufacturers Association. Today, Rachael serves as Content Director for the TOC Worldwide port and container supply chain events and is co-owner of Cool Logistics Resources, providing events and intelligence for the global perishable logistics and transport sectors. She is a member of the Container Shipping Supporting Seafarers initiative to raise awareness and funding that supports the health, safety and wellbeing of seafarers worldwide, and is a community project member for the World Economic Forum Blockchain in Supply Chain initiative. Her company Next Level Information provides strategic content, PR, social media, digital marketing and events consultancy to corporate and institutional clients. Her passion is to facilitate communication and dialogue to improve business outcomes.
