Communication Skills That Work


A 1-day workshop for frontline professionals on team conflict, effective feedback, and how to mentor others

Location: University of Calgary, Veterinary Medicine

Includes: training, lunch, dinner and course materials for use in practice and academic settings, ground transportation to the Banff Center.

This day long workshop is intended for members of the veterinary team who interact with clients and colleagues and want to strengthen skills that promote: 

  • compliance 
  • effective dialogue with team members
  • managing emotional conversations 
  • conducting financial discussions
  • discussing euthanasia
  • dealing with ethical issues 

Workshop highlights:

  • Learn evidence based communication skills
  • Participate in experiential learning that is supportive, learner centered, and fun
  • Practice communication skills through 5 case-based scenarios
  • Work in a small group setting with individualized attention to your learning goals including balanced, objective and useful feedback
  • Assume the role of ‘coach’ for the purpose of mentoring employees in the practice setting
  • Leave the session with a very clear plan for how to integrate and apply the skills learned to day-to-day and work related communication 

The workshop will be structured around a large group interactive session followed by small group work that will include interviewing actors that are trained to portray veterinary specific situations, giving and receiving feedback from members of the small group and the actor. The day will conclude with another large group gathering that will include goal setting for how and what to take back to the practice setting.

The workshop is limited to 30 participants who are willing to dive in, practice, and develop communication skills and strategies to enhance patient and client care.
