The Latest in ICC 500 Storm Shelter and FEMA Safe Room Requirements
Attendees will recognize the importance of storm shelters and safe rooms as life-saving structures; learn the major requirements of ICC 500 and the differences between ICC 500-2014 and recently revised FEMA P-361 (2015); and understand FEMA’s role in educating the public and promoting safe rooms in the United States.

Floodplain Design, Construction, and Impacts on Floor Insurance
Session will describe floods, floodplains and the potential hazards to buildings; explain the differences between wet flood proofing and dry flood proofing techniques and acceptable applications, describe the role of flood openings in flood events resilient structures, and analyze the role of building compliance in securing lowering flood insurance rates and what mitigation solutions are available.

Trends, Analysis, and Studies of Building Code Enforcement Efforts Across the Nation
Attendees will gain a better understanding of national trends in building code enforcement, department financing, staffing, workload, and be able to compare their own departments to the national trends to discover how they are progressing compared to their peers.

Unforeseen and Unexpected Hazards with Interior Finishes
Attendees will be able to identify at least four fire tests used to evaluate interior finish materials; identify at least four interior finish materials for which ASTM E84 should not be the only fire test used to evaluate the materials; Identify the different heat release requirements in NFPA 265 and NFPA 286; and list at least four interior finish materials for which the IBC has revised the fire test requirements over the past several revision cycles.
