Simon .Reeve
Conference MC

Simon commenced his career at Seven in Perth in 1979, as a sports producer and reporter. He moved to London in 1982 working with television news agency Visnews.


He joined the prestigious Beyond 2000 team in Sydney in 1987. Simon was a key part of the Beyond team for six years, travelling the world covering science and technology. He went on to report for the sports feature series Seasons, then onto Wild Life with Olivia Newton John and Good Medicine for the Nine network for 4 years.

A passion for Africa inspired him, along with his family to spend two years living in Botswana, where he co produced Mad Mike and Mark for Animal Planet. Returning to Australia, Simon re-joined the Seven Network, working for Sunrise.

He was a commentator for Seven's equestrian coverage at the Athens games and the gymnastics at both the Athens and Beijing Olympics.

Simon presented the popular children's television series It’s Academic for 9 years and more recently Million Dollar Minute. He has hosted The Force on Seven for the past 10 years and has sport on Weekend Sunrise since 2005.

Simon is an ambassador for the Be Centre in Sydney and has been an ambassador for the Australian charity, Heartkids for over 14 years - since his son Sam underwent life-saving heart surgery as a three month old baby.
 
Leassa Armstrong

Leassa Armstrong is a director in the Australian Taxation Office. She’s responsible for the Taxable payments reporting system introduced in the building and construction industry in 2012 and the introduction of the government grants and payments reporting measure beginning in 2017.

Her distinguished career in the ATO includes senior positions in Pay as you go withholding and Employer obligations.

Nick Aronson

Nick Aronson is the Commonwealth Bank’s Managing Director and Global Head of Transaction Banking, responsible for delivering CommBank’s leading-edge cash management, payables and receivables, merchant and banking platform solutions to many of Australia’s largest corporations, multinationals and government departments.  Nick is also responsible for thought leadership, marketing and innovation programs ensuring CBA’s working capital management solutions are recognised by the market as best-in-breed. It was from this team that the Bank’s best-in-class Innovation Lab was conceived and born.


Nick joined the Bank at the beginning of 2012, before which he was COO of one of Australia’s largest independent asset finance companies.  Prior to this Nick was Director of Global Marketing and Alliances at Oracle Corporation in the US, where he held a variety of roles in alliances, marketing, business development and operations.  Nick has also held various roles at IBM and The Marketing Store Worldwide.

Nick is a Senior Associate of the Financial Services Institute of Australia and a Member of Australia Institute of Company Directors.
 
Daniele Bird

Daniele is currently the Assistant Auditor-General for Performance Audit at the Queensland Audit Office where she leads a program to examine public sector efficiency and effectiveness, and identify opportunities for performance improvement.


Daniele is a chartered accountant with over 20 years’ experience focusing on improving financial and business processes for public and private sector organisations.

Prior to joining the QAO Daniele was a Partner with Ernst & Young Brisbane, leading the Financial Performance Improvement team for five years. Before that she was with PricewaterhouseCoopers for 15 years, working across multiple service lines including assurance, risk management and advisory.

Her experience includes strategy development, organisational design, financial and business process improvement and program evaluation. Daniele’s global experience includes serving clients in Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and the United States of America.

Donna Bliss

Michael Blythe
Chief Economist and Managing Director of Economics

Michael is the Chief Economist and Managing Director of Economics at the Commonwealth Bank.  His extensive experience as an economist reflects more than thirty years working in economic policy and financial-market-related areas. Michael’s role encompasses monitoring, analysing and forecasting trends in the Australian economy and financial markets.  In addition, he prepares a wide range of research material on matters of current interest.  In his capacity as the CBA’s Chief Economist, he is a regular conference presenter and media commentator on major economic developments and themes.  Michael and his team have consistently ranked in the top three for macroeconomic analysis advice in various industry polls.

Michael works in the Institutional Banking & Markets division of the Commonwealth Bank.  This division is responsible for managing the Group’s relationships with major corporate, institutional and government clients and providing a full range of capital raising, transactional and risk management products and services.

After graduating in economics from the University of Sydney in 1982, he spent a total of 13 years in various roles within the Economic Group of the Reserve Bank of Australia.  This included a stint at the International Monetary Fund in 1988.  He was the RBA's Senior Economist from 1991-95.  Key features of these roles involved the provision of economic analysis and policy advice. Michael joined the Commonwealth Bank in late 1995.

Justine Callaghan

Justine Callaghan has been the Director Finance at the Public Trustee since October 2015.  This position provides the strategic lead in respect of all finance-related activities including financial management, budget coordination, financial and management reporting for the Public Trustee of Queensland, the executive leadership team and other stakeholders.

Justine has extensive experience in senior finance leadership roles predominantly in the mining industry, in particular with Glencore (formally Xstrata and Mount Isa Mines Limited). Recently, she has transitioned from mining to the public sector with management roles at West Morton Hospital and Health Service and the Public Trustee.

Justine has a Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in accounting) from the University of Southern Queensland and is a certified practicing accountant. She is a recent graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, Company Directors course  and passed with  Order of Merit.

Gary joined G8 Education Limited as Chief Financial Officer in July 2016. Prior to joining G8, Gary had spent 12 years in senior leadership roles at Super Retail Group and Flight Centre, heading up finance, development and supply chain functions during his tenure with these companies. Lee Clayton has over 18 years' experience with the Queensland public sector.  She is currently Team Leader of the Fiscal Coordination and Monitoring team in Queensland Treasury.  The team is responsible for coordinating State Budget and forward estimates processes and assisting the government with monitoring the State's financial performance.  The team also prepares and maintains a range of policy and guidance documents to assist agencies with their financial management and governance processes.  Lee led the comprehensive review and rewrite of Queensland's public sector financial management legislation, that came into effect from 1 July 2009.
 
Prior to joining Treasury, Lee was an auditor with the Queensland Audit Office for 6 years.

Anthony Close is the Auditor-General for Queensland (acting) where he leads the Queensland Audit Office in providing independent scrutiny of the state’s public sector entities and promoting accountability and transparency of government services.


From 2013 Anthony was the Deputy Auditor-General for Queensland where he led financial auditing for over 500 public sector clients and a performance audit program that identifies opportunities for the public sector to improve their performance. He also managed the Queensland Audit Office’s specialist and corporate services support provided for its clients and other stakeholders.

Anthony has driven the adoption of systemised data collection and analytics across the Queensland public sector to achieve greater efficiencies and more valuable insights for clients. He has been leading change and using best practice in business operations to help the Queensland Audit Office to achieve its vision of better public services.

Christine has worked at senior levels within Queensland Treasury over several years – interrupted by a period of 5 years working on major projects in other public sector organisations, she returned to Treasury in 2013.
Christine has extensive experience in leading both operational and large complex programs - including the establishment of the Program Management and Investment Unit within Queensland Health for its $7Bn capital program.

Christine’s core expertise lies in program and project management combined with particular skills in business strategy and change management and in mid-2015 was appointed to her current role leading the Queensland Government, Social Benefit Bonds Pilot Program.

Christine has been recognised for professional excellence throughout her career as a recipient of two Australia Day Awards and both State and National Annual Awards for Professional Excellence in the banking sector.

Mary-Anne is the Deputy Under Treasurer for the Agency Performance Group and in this role is responsible for providing advice and analysis on public policy, fiscal and economic issues, particularly in relation to the health, education, communities, justice and housing portfolios.  

Previously Mary-Anne was the Deputy Under Treasurer for the Economics Group where she was oversaw the economics functions of the department including macroeconomic forecasting, microeconomic policy and Government Owned Corporations oversight.  Prior to that Mary-Anne spent more than a decade working on infrastructure projects and commercial transactions.
 
Mary-Anne commenced her career as a graduate with Queensland Treasury.  She is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and holds a Bachelor of Laws from Queensland University of Technology and a Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) from the University of Southern Queensland.  Mary-Anne was also awarded a University Medal from the University of Southern Queensland.

Peter FitzSimmons

Peter FitzSimons is a well-respected columnist and journalist of international renown, and has interviewed dignitaries from George Bush to Mother Theresa. In 2011 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia "for service to literature as a biographer, sports journalist and commentator, and to the community through contributions to conservation, disability care, social welfare and sporting organisations".


A former rugby star, he broke into the Wallabies under the coaching of Alan Jones. He then had a long career at Channel Nine. He has written 12 best-selling books and is the biographer of World Cup winning Wallaby captain, Nick Farr-Jones, Kim Beazley, John Eales and the “White Mouse “of Europe, Nancy Wake. As one of the bestselling non-fiction authors in the country, he has sold over 1.2 million books including over 600,000 copies of his war stories. He is on the Council of the War Memorial, on the Anzac Centenary Advisory Board and is currently writing another story on Gallipoli. He shares hilarious anecdotes of the high and mighty, as well as fascinating tales of his travels. Shane Griffin

Shane  commenced with Queensland Treasury in 2012 and subsequently joined the newly formed Horizon Program in late 2015 as a Project Manager / Business Analyst.


In this role, Shane has overseen the design, development and launch of the BP3Map, a digitisation of Budget Paper 3, which details the Queensland Government’s capital works program).

Kylie McGovern

Kylie McGovern works as a Senior HR Consultant within the Business Partnering team in Department of Education and Training Human Resources. Starting out as a HR generalist, she made the move to being a full time facilitator, where courses on performance management were her speciality.

After working in a project role in the Public Service Commissions ‘Conduct and Performance Excellence’ team, she made the foray into the operational world of performance management working for the Department of Education and Training, where she leads the integrated employee performance management framework project, and is also a key contact for performance improvement cases within the DET central office.

Her passion for HR started early in her career, and she worked full time while studying part time, first a Bachelor of Business majoring in HR, and next a Masters of Human Resource Management. Emma is a Director in KPMG’s CFO Advisory Group, providing specialist expertise and practical advice on complex areas of Australian Accounting Standards to both the private and public sector. Emma has over 16 years audit and advisory experience, with 8 of those years spent in KPMG’s technical financial reporting group.

Emma has prepared and presented a national annual reporting accounting update focussing on public sector accounting issues for the last five years that has considered the accounting for not-for-profits and for-profit public sector entities and is well versed in public sector accounting issue.

Dr John Tickell

Malcom Wilson
Chief Finance Officer

Malcolm Wilson joined the Queensland Public Service as the Department of Health’s Chief Finance Officer in November 2013.


Prior to that Malcolm’s experience was all in the private sector and he has held a range of site, business unit and corporate roles in a number of large complex and geographically spread organisations.

Malcolm has participated in major mine and mineral processing facility developments, led significant commercial contract negotiations, been prominent in a number of successful ERP implementations and played a key role in corporate funding arrangements, off-balance sheet financing, acquisitions and divestments.

Malcolm holds two degrees from the University of Tasmania – a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours in Chemistry and a Bachelor of Commerce. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
