Elise Archer MP

Elise Archer was elected as the Liberal Member for Denison in the Tasmanian Parliament in 2010. Elise is currently the Shadow Minister for Police and Emergency Management, Planning, Community Development (covering women, child/youth affairs, seniors, multiculturalism, migrants, refugees and the Disability Bureau) and Aboriginal Affairs. Elise has a family history of heart disease and is passionate about raising awareness amongst Tasmanian women about their risk of heart disease.

A former self-confessed gym-junkie, Elise is trying to find ways to fit physical activity back into her daily routine.

"Having just turned 40, I wanted to take the Healthy Heart Challenge to improve my own physical activity and to increase knowledge of my own heart health," she said.

Elise has chosen the 'Be active every day' goal.

Week 3 update

I have tried to be more active over the last three weeks. I am a very active person but not in the ‘regular exercise’ sense.

What has worked for me so far is taking the stairs instead of lifts and walking to appointments when time permits. I have found it difficult to set aside longer periods of time for walking. I have found a way around this by doing two or three longer walks per week as that is more achievable for me.

My advice to other Challengers is to do the Challenge with someone else as they can help you keep track, support you, and make you exercise!

Week 6 update

The last few weeks have been very busy and I have had to spend a lot of time indoors, for long periods of time. I have started at 7am and finished late at night so it has been difficult to exercise other than take the stairs!

Therefore, my exercise routine has suffered greatly. Parliament has been sitting for the last four weeks but as soon as this week is over, I aim to increase my physical activity again.

I have managed to eat healthily most days – lots of vegetable based soups, lean meat and vegetables or salad.
