Biographies
Canadian Security and Intelligence Service (CSIS)
The speaker has been with the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) for over 7 years. He has worked on various national security files including terrorism, espionage and the proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction. He currently works with CSIS’s Cyber Centre in a Liaison and Outreach position. CSIS Cyber Centre is responsible for investigation cyber threats which are assessed to be threats to the security of Canada.
 
Rod Allan
Rod Allan is a Project Manager and Organizational Change Manager with over 20 years’ experience managing major projects and organizational change management in a variety of sectors. His portfolio includes projects in National Defense Avionics and Communications, Satellite and Broadcast Television, Provincial Housing, Corporate Registry & Vital Statistics, Electronic Health Records, and most recently Gas and Pipeline initiatives for SaskEnergy/TranGas (Province of Saskatchewan).
 
Max Ambrosi
Max Ambrosi is at Pietro Fiorentini for more than 15 years and after more than a decade experience in international sales was holding a position as Product manager for gas metering technologies and gas smart grid products. Among them, Turbine meters, Traditional and Smart diaphragm meters as well as smart regulators for gas smart grids applications. He is also actively participate in National gas committee working groups and International Voice of the Customers in-depth process of capturing a customer's expectations and preferences. Since 2015 is the Commercial manager for Fiorentini USA, Inc.
 
John Anderson
John has been with Emerson Process Management for over 30 years specializing the last 27 years in Gas Regulators, Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA), and Remote Telemetry Units(RTUs) used in the natural gas industry. His positions with Emerson include international assignments in Singapore and Bologna, Italy. He graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a Bachelor of Science in both Electronics Technology and Manufacturing Technology and from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting. He also has a MABS from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, TX. John lives in Zimmerman, MN. and is currently a Regional Manager for Canada and the New England area of the USA with the Emerson’s Regulator Technologies division in McKinney, Texas.
 
Nishant Batta
Nishant Batta is a Professional Engineer with over six years of experience, all of them with TransGas Limited in Regina. Nishant received his Mechanical Engineering degree in 2008, from the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon. He began his work at TransGas with the Pipeline Control and Planning team back in 2009, and then transitioned over to Standards Engineering in 2010 where he stayed until the end of 2011. In 2012, Nishant joined the Measurement Engineering, where he is now the engineering lead. His focus has primarily been on Gas Quality and Gas Quality Monitoring, driving tariff and technology changes to accommodate and manage the varying gas supplies on the TransGas network.
 
Donald Beverly
Don Beverly is senior advisor in business development and renewable energy for Gaz Métro with special interests in biomethane, forest biomass, hydrogen and natural gas quality. Before Gaz Métro, he worked in industrial equipment manufacturing, research and development in thermal processes, and transformation of primary materials. He has a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from McGill University and a diploma in electrical engineering technology from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology.
 
Christian Bonneau
Christian Bonneau is a Senior Program Officer for gas measurement working in the Utility Metering Division of Measurement Canada’s Program Development Directorate. He graduated from Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu College in 2002 with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology and began his career in Petroleum Truck Trailer Manufacturing. He has been in his current position since 2013 and prior to that he was a legal metrologist working on gas meter type approval evaluations and gas calibrations in the Measurement Canada’s Gas Laboratory for 6 years.
 
Martin Bouska
Martin Bouska works for Welker, Inc. in the Territory Development group. His role/responsibility is business development and expansion in Northeast of USA (Marcellus and Uttica Shale region) and Western Canada region. He received his B.A. in International Business & Trade and B.A. in Business Management from Florida Atlantic University, Florida and consequently received his MBA from the University of St. Thomas, Texas. In his role, he serves as a key point of contact to many mid to downstream oil and gas companies that seek optimal sampling solutions. He is also responsible to train and develop Welker Representatives that service those territories. In addition, he provides technical support to many international representatives and oil and gas companies.
 
Jim Bowen
Bowen joined the gas business in 1978 as a Staff Engineer at ANR Pipeline Co. in Detroit, MI (now TransCanada), working various jobs in Operations & Engineering with a focus on gas measurement and primary devices in gathering and transmission applications. He moved to the vendor side of the business, and Houston, in 1998 working for several gas meter manufacturers. Today, he's employed as National Product Manager, Flow Solutions at SICK, Inc. Married with 3 grown children, Bowen enjoys golf, vehicle mechanics and traveling with his wife Maureen.
 
Mitch Carlson
Mitch started his career with TransGas in 2006 as an Engineer-in-Training with Pipeline and Facility Automation before moving into the Gas Measurement department in 2009 and then joining SaskEnergy Business Development in 2011. Since then, Mitch has been actively exploring opportunities for compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG) uses, to support SaskEnergy’s core operations as well as non-traditional off-pipe applications where natural gas can provide cost savings and environmental benefits to end-users in Saskatchewan. Mitch recently changed roles at the beginning of 2016 and is currently the Manager of TransGas Customer Facility Requests. This role provides the opportunity to directly engage with various businesses in Saskatchewan seeking natural gas supply. Mitch is a graduate of the University of Regina with a Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Electronic Systems Engineering, receiving his Professional Engineering designation from APEGS in 2009.
 
Steve Clyens
Steve Clyens is a senior program officer for gas measurement working in the Utility Metering Division of Measurement Canada’s Program Development Directorate. He graduated from Durham College of Applied Arts and Technology in 1989 with a diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology and began his career with Measurement Canada immediately after. He has been in his current position since 2011 and prior to that he was the regional gas measurement specialist in Ontario for 15 years.
 
Ken Coates
Ken Coates is a rare public commentator who brings deep understanding of past and present realities together with compelling ideas about Canada’s future. His passionate and highly engaging talks have captivated diverse audiences across the country, from college administrators and economic development officers to Aboriginal entrepreneurs and community activists. Ken is Canada’s Research Chair in Regional Innovation and brings his experience in East Asia and around the Circumpolar world to bear on his understanding of Canada’s strengths and weaknesses. Ken combines irreverence, insight and a sense of humour in his conversations about the issues that matter most to Canadians.
 
Michel Couillard
Michel has been a technical training adviser at Gazmetro since 2007. Michel is a specialized tech. instructor in advanced pressure regulating. He is also instructor to the newly hired junior technicians that repair and maintain the distribution and transmission network pipeline. This is all part of Gazmetro’s pipeline management and maintenance training program. Michel also works with engineering as tech support and is involved in the production of working procedure manuals used by the technicians in the field. Before Gazmetro, Michel worked as an automated systems electro-mechanic (sometimes called robotics) for 20 years and was specialized in pneumatic automation environments. Finally, he worked between 2003 and 2007 as a teacher instructor in automated systems at the best rated trade school in Quebec.
 
Guy Dacquay
Mr. (Guy) Dacquay is a graduate of Winnipeg’s Red River Community College in Electrical Engineering Technology and has thirty two years of experience in the federal regulation of electricity and natural gas measurement, working as an inspector, program officer, and currently as manager of Utility Metering Division for Measurement Canada (MC). Mr. Dacquay oversees the development and updating of electricity and gas legislation, specifications, policies, and programs, and is a permanent member of the MC/industry Electricity and Gas Process Advisory Committees. He has previously chaired the Canadian Workgroups that are contributing to the development of international type-approval and verification specifications for the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) on Technical Committees TC8 (Gas Meters) and TC12 (Electricity Meters). Mr. Dacquay resides in Ottawa, Ontario with his wife Christine and their children.
 
Chris DesRoches
Started as a Technical Sales Representative for Petro Equipment Sales in 1997 with a focus on applications related to filtration, separation and gas quality analysis in the natural gas sector. Appointed President of Petro Engineered Products in August 2010.
 
Harjasleen Dhillon
Harjasleen Dhillon (EIT) completed her degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Calgary in 2013. Harjasleen completed a 16 month internship with ATCO Gas in the Distribution Planning group helping look after long term forecasts and system modelling. After graduation, she joined ATCO Gas as an EIT in the Distribution Design group where she designed gas distribution systems for new communities and upgraded existing systems. Recently, Harjasleen has moved into the Pressure Control Engineering group looking after station design and upgrade projects for the Urban Pipeline Replacement project. She participates in a variety of activities including volunteering as an advisor for the Junior Achievement Company program and sitting on the ATCO Gas Calgary Corporate Challenge organization committee.
 
Rob Dolhai
For many years, Rob has supported Gas utilities nation-wide in their efforts to expand and improve their infrastructure. Previously product Manager at General Electric for Mooney & Becker products. He continues his passion by offering turn-key solutions through the growing team at A.F. Hall.
 
Timothy Egan
Timothy M. Egan became President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Gas Association in September 2010. Prior to his appointment he was President of High Park Group (HPG), a public affairs consulting firm. Mr. Egan serves as Canada’s representative at the International Gas Union, sitting on the Executive Committee and as the Regional Coordinator for North America. Mr. Egan is publisher of the Energy Regulation Quarterly, and editor of the magazine Energy. He has an undergraduate degree in history from the University of Ottawa, and common and civil law degrees from McGill University. He was called to the Ontario bar in 1995. He is married to Patricia (nee Armstrong) and they have five daughters.
 
Lloyd Flory
Lloyd J. Flory, P. Eng. is a professional engineer with 34 years of experience. Lloyd also has his Permission to Consult licence from APEGS (Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan). He has worked in the natural gas industry at SaskEnergy his entire career with the majority of it spent writing, revising, and administering material specifications and operating procedures. Those tasks included interpreting and applying published national and international codes and standards to in-house specifications and operating procedures. Lloyd was the business lead during the design and building of the SharePoint application that (1) houses the change request workflow for SaskEnergy’s system operating procedures and (2) is the central repository for the same.
 
Olivier Griperay
Olivier Griperay is the Market Manager for Arkema’s Gas Odorants business in North America since January 2013. Olivier is born in France where he graduated from Reims Business School and specialized in International Marketing and Strategic Alliances. In 1994 after his MBA, Olivier moved to Shanghai, China where he helped French companies expand their business locally for three years. In 1998, Olivier moved to the USA for the Invest in France Agency, first in Los Angeles then in New Work City as their VP, Life Sciences Markets. In 2005, Olivier was hired by the New York City Economic Development Agency as their VP of International Business Development, under the Bloomberg Administration. From 2008 to 2010, Olivier worked in the Medical Devices industry, first as COO of Medicrea in Hoboken (Spinal implants), NJ, and then as General Manager of Vygon Neuro (Brain implants) in Audubon, PA. In 2011, Olivier was hired by Arkema as their Global Market Manager for Ethyl Mercaptan, which among other things is used in propane odorization. Olivier now lives in Pennsylvania with his wife and two children.
 
Duane Harris
Duane has logged over 30 years of experience in the natural gas industry, with 17 years as Manager of Measurement with Panhandle Energy. As such, he was involved in all aspects of measurement technology, including implementation of new gas measurement systems. As Vice President of Business Development and Customer Support at Flow-Cal, Duane coordinates the implementation and installation of major Enterprise customer projects. Mr. Harris has led and holds a number of prestigious positions within the various industry measurement schools and committees around the world. These positions include General Chairman and Board member of the American School of Gas Measurement and Technology as well as President of the Gulf Coast Gas Measurement Society. Duane has presented technical papers to AGA, CGA, ASGMT, ISHM, CSHM, and Entelec.
 
Master of Ceremonies: Gordon Hetherington
Gordon Hetherington is Foothills Industrial Products (FIP) longest standing employee. Hetherington will celebrate 25 years with FIP in 2017. While he’s not in the office entertaining his co-workers by breaking into song or telling a good joke, he’s traveling around Western Canada meeting with some of FIP’s wonderful customers. Outside of work Hetherington enjoys spending his weekends hiking in Canmore, AB and travelling around the globe with his lovely wife Lori.
 
Paul Honchar
Received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1979. His past 37+ years of experience with Sensus, Invensys, Equimeter, and Rockwell International includes positions in Product Design Engineering, Quality, International Technical Service, Director of Technical Service and Training, and Marketing.
 
Steve Hurbanek
Steve has been in the gas and gas associated industry since 1973. He retired from the PA PUC in 2008 as Pipeline Safety Inspector. Accepted a position with the NC Utilities Commission as Pipeline Safety Engineer until 2012 when he became Director of Oil & Gas Training for System One Holdings, LLC Pittsburgh, Pa. Steve is now the Director of Business Development for OmniMetrix out of Atlanta, Ga. He was a past member and instructor for the Gas Measurement Short Course, Robert Morris, and currently Serves on the American Gas Association, GPTC committee
 
Will Johnson
Will has been working with TransGas for over 14 years. He is currently managing an electrical engineering design group which supports SaskEnergy and TransGas for new capital infrastructure projects including transmission, compression, and metering facilities. Will is married with three girls which keeps the family very involved in activities like basketball, swimming, and hockey. Will in his spare time likes to play hockey and swim to keep fit. He also enjoys photography and is a Riders and Raptors Fan. For winters the family likes to take warm holidays - sun and sand is preferred over cold and snow. Will also helps his community with several activities his children are in. He has coached many hockey and basketball teams over the years and sits on the Regina Community Basketball Association board of directors. He is a Level 3 swimming Official and managed a swim meet for the Saskatchewan summer swim season with the Regina Piranhas Summer Swim Club. Lastly, he holds two interesting provincial summer swimming records.
 
Ashu Kahol
Ashu Kahol is a Profession Engineer with 15 years of experience. He started his career as an Energy Engineer in a Paper Mill in India, he also worked with Maple Leaf Foods and started with Enbridge Gas in 2007. He has worked in different capacities within Enbridge and presently working as the Program Manager, M&R Standards.”
 
Jason Laforest
Jason Laforest, a Professional Engineer since 2003, works for Union Gas in the Stations, Electrical & Controls Engineering department. He received his BASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor in 1997, and worked as a designer in the automotive sector for thirteen years before joining Union Gas in 2011. In addition to developing company policies and procedures regarding electrical safety, he also designs electrical installations for natural gas transmission and distribution facilities and provides guidance on the safe use of electrical equipment where hazardous locations are present.
 
Brittany Macnamara
Brittany Macnamara completed her degree in Industrial Systems Engineering from the University of Regina in 2012. She currently works in Distribution Engineering for Saskatchewan’s Crown Corporation natural gas distributor, SaskEnergy. She provides support and leadership in planning, design, installation, modification and operation of distribution facilities to accommodate the expansion, maintenance and integrity of the distribution system. She has been heavily focused on pipe stress mitigation at regulation stations and in geotechnically sensitive areas. Brittany has also served as the co-chair of Generation Energy, an under 30 youth committee and led environmental initiatives, Crown collaboration events and fundraising sponsorships for The Children's Wish Foundation.
 
Safinur Majumder
Safinur Majumder is a recent grad from University of Toronto Mining Engineering. He is currently working as Sales Engineer at Romet Limited pursuing a career in sales and business in the natural gas industry. His hobbies are Gym and Sports (soccer, badminton, table tennis). He hopes to demonstrate the benefits of Romet Rotary Meters.
 
David McConkey
David McConkey is Senior Advisor of Operations and Manager of Cyber Security at the Canadian Gas Association (CGA). His role in operations serves to enhance the safety and integrity of Canada’s natural gas delivery industry via the development of industry best practices and guidance in areas such as measurement, cyber security, corrosion control, damage prevention, and asset management. As Manager of Cyber Security, David is the lead on CGA’s cyber security initiatives including those across industry members as well as those with government partners. Prior to joining CGA, David taught financial mathematics and project management and consulted for High Park Group, a public affairs firm which performs within the energy sector. He graduated with distinction from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Mathematics, majoring in Applied Mathematics and minoring in Philosophy. In 2006, David obtained a Masters of Electrical Engineering from McGill University in the Optimal Control of Hybrid Systems.
 
Johnny Menard
Johnny Menard has been working with SaskEnergy since 2009. After two years working with the Operations Planning and Maintenance group, Johnny joined the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Project as the Deployment Lead in 2011. In 2012, Johnny became the Business Lead for the AMI Project where he supervised activities related to the AMI Deployment and the implementation of the AMI Solution. With the conclusion of the AMI Project in 2015 and the ongoing transition to business as usual, Johnny is now the Manager of AMI Support within the Measurement Operations group at SaskEnergy; working closely with key departments to ensure SaskEnergy is achieving the benefits of the AMI Solution.
 
Harry Pytel
Harry Pytel started his working career as a design/ draftsperson in the compressed air industry, moving to the natural gas industry in 1991 with Canadian Meter Co. He has held many positions with the company including Manager of Sales Administration, Customer Service Manager, and Operations Manager (Edmonton Facility). Harry is now the District Sales Manager, Western for ELSTER Canadian Meter, ELSTER Perfection, now part of Honeywell. Harry holds a Vocational certificate in Industrial/ Mechanical/ and Architectural Drafting.
 
Julien Samson
Julien Samson, P. Eng. FEC graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering from Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS in 2002, after graduation Julien spent 11 years working in the automotive and manufacturing industry with varying roles from Plant Engineering, Quality Control, and Process Improvement. Julien has been working with Union Gas since 2013 in the Station Engineering department, and has been a contributor to business related initiatives, and a core member of the Standard Station Design project team.
 
John Scroggie
John Alexander Scroggie is an Technical Sales Representative with Foothills Industrial Products in Calgary, Alberta. Still a relative newcomer to the industry, John has just under 3 years of experience working in the field of Natural Gas Distribution and Transmission Systems. John is a graduate of the Aerospace Engineering program at Carleton University where he focussed on Aerospace Structures & Systems.
 
Daniel Simon
Daniel was born in June 1960. He has been working for the department of Consumer and Corporate affairs since 1980. In 1995, Measurement Canada was created as an Agency of Industry Canada department which later became Innovation Science and Economic Development. Daniel’s role as a federal inspector has him working in the field of electricity and Natural Gas measurement. His current title is Regional Gas specialist for the Eastern region of Canada.
 
Rob Sterling
Rob Sterling is a P.Eng in the Station Engineering department at Union Gas Ltd. He holds the title Station Engineering Technical Guardian and as part of this position, holds the responsibility for large station design projects and maintaining knowledge of advanced station design concepts. During his 6 years at Union Gas, Rob has been responsible for hundreds of station designs and has played an active role in many initiatives including the Standard Station Design Project and Station Asset Integrity Management Program. He received his Mechanical Engineering degree in 2010 and his Master’s in Management Science in 2015, both from the University of Waterloo.
 
Brandon Stuart
Brandon Stuart has been with Union Gas since 2004 and is currently working in Station Engineering. During the 4 years in Station Engineering, Brandon has been responsible for hundreds of station designs and many different projects such as the re-write of Union Gas’ Hazardous Area Classification documents. She graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2003, with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Business. Brandon lives in Chatham, Ontario and is very active in her community.
 
Paul Tang
Paul Tang is a registered Professional Engineer in the province of British Columbia, Canada. He is currently a Senior Engineer Specialist with Fortis BC Energy. Paul has more than forty years of experience in various aspects of the natural gas industry. He holds a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Electrical Engineering, and a Master of Science degree from the University of British Columbia. Paul joined the Gas Division of BC Hydro, the predecessor of FortisBC Energy, as a control and instrumentation engineer in 1975. He has since led and managed many projects in process control, instrumentation, telemetry, radio communications, SCADA, and gas measurement both in Canada and abroad.
 
Jim Tweedie
James Tweedie is the Director, Operations, Safety and Integrity Management at the Canadian Gas Association. In his role at CGA, Jim has been involved in files such as energy security, damage prevention, health and safety, RNG, and asset management, renewal and integrity, just to name a few. Before joining the CGA, Jim had an extensive 35 year career with Enbridge Gas Distribution. From 2004 to 2008, Jim was Manager of Operations, Eastern Region for Enbridge, where he garnered much of his knowledge and expertise in the natural gas distribution industry.Prior to this, Mr. Tweedie was a Manager of Construction and acting Regional Manager of Enbridge’s Eastern Region. Additionally, he has worked on a number of international gas distribution feasibility studies and construction evaluation projects in Turkey, Mexico, and Malaysia. Jim is currently the co-chair of NRCan’s Critical Infrastructure; Energy and Utility Sectors Network and a past Chair of the Board & current Executive Committee member of the Canadian Common Ground Alliance.
 
Stephen West
Stephen West works for Welker, Inc. in the Chemical Infusion group with a focus on the OdorEyes product line His role and responsibility is business development, sales and support of Welker injecton and odorization products. In his role, he serves as a key point of contact to many oil and gas companies that seek odorization solutions. Stephen received his B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin.
 
Wael Zayd
A Results-driven individual with an overall 10 years extensive experience in leading business and IT initiatives that delivers value while ensuring excellent customer service in project management and industrial engineering (process improvement) roles.

Wael worked in a number of different industries such as: 3PL (3rd Party Logistics), Retail (Grocery & Pharmacy), Utilities and Manufacturing.

Wael has recently accepted a role in Enbridge as an Asset Program Manager for Station Asset class which proved to be very rewarding and challenging. Wael is able to apply his previous project management, process improvement & data analytics skills while learning new set of valuable skills to ensure the success of the implementation of Asset Management Initiative. Wael’s background is in Mechanical Engineering and he also holds an MBA degree. Wael is a P.Eng, PMP, Green Belt Six Sigma certified.
