Tim Nourse, President of Making Cents International Shares Successful Programme on Improving Employability for Young People

Tell us about your role at Making Cents International.

I serve as President of Making Cents International, a social enterprise that increases economic opportunities for youth, women and smallholder farmers. In this role, I manage the company and also lead our financial services, including financial education.

You will be speaking at a session titled Maximising Financial Education for Success focused on young migrants. Can you share with our participants an example of an effective programme and how it boosted employability opportunities for urban youth/migrants?

In Palestine, Making Cents conducted an assessment of existing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) private college programmes and found that the curricular offerings did not adequately prepare young people for formal sector employment because they ignored the development of critical workplace readiness skills. In response, we developed two practical, experientially oriented curricula for students – a “Hands-on Work Readiness Skills” course that focused on communication, teamwork and problem solving, and a “Financial Literacy and Life Skills” course that concentrated on planning, money management and decision making. The courses were adopted by the colleges and led to improvements in the targeted life and workplace skills among the 5,000 students that passed through the schools annually, helping them to find and retain formal sector employment.

What are you looking forward to most at the Citi-FT Financial Education Summit?

I’m looking forward to sharing our experiences with participants, learning from them, and exploring questions like “How much financial education is necessary?”; “How can financial education contribute to workforce development?”; and “How can technology improve the quality and outreach of financial education?”
