Digital Payments Offer Immediate Benefits

A World Bank report recently published with the support of the World Bank Development Research Group, the Better Than Cash Alliance, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation investigates how digital payments can reduce cost and increase security of sending and receiving payments, and help advance the goal of broader financial inclusion. Leora Klapper at the World Bank explains, “As we found when examining a series of studies from around the world, digital payments offer immediate benefits for both senders and receivers.” As evidence points to the vast opportunities digital payments can provide for the the poor, it will be paramount to discuss the role of government in delivering broad-based digital finance and greater access to payments. The governments of Peru, Kenya, Colombia, and the Philippines are the first to have made this commitment.
