JEREMY JUST:
THE COOLER SIDE OF SCIENCE
How hot is hot? How cold is cold? How awesome is liquid nitrogen? Join Jeremy and explore the extremes of
the temperature scale, focusing on the cooler side. Warning: Show may contain
mild humour and explosions. Suitable for all ages.

Lightwave Stage, 9.20am & 12.20pm

JEREMY JUST
LIQUID NITROGEN TAMER
Jeremy is a Hobart based science communicator who enjoys nothing more than
entertaining people with science. Currently right in the middle of a chemistry PhD, Jeremy still finds time for science outreach and engagement all over Tasmania. He is a mentor for the Young Tassie Scientists program, hosts National Science Week quiz nights, and performs exciting science shows for schools and communities across Australia.

RUBEN MEERMAN:
QUANTUM MECHANICS: THE
BRIGHTEST IDEA OF ALL TIME
In 1900, Max Planck stumbled onto an equation that explained the colour of light bulb filaments and the sunlight but thought his bright idea was merely a mathematical trick. Sixty years later, Theo Maiman’s pulled off the closest thing to real magic a human being has ever done.
He invented the laser. In this talk, Ruben Meerman uses laser beams, makes rainbows and swings a smartphone in a sock to explain what all the fuss about
quantum mechanics is actually about.

Lightwave Stage, 10am

CHEER UP! EVIDENCE BASED
OPTIMISM
You live in the most peaceful time in human history. Believe it or not, people are smarter, nicer, more tolerant, long-lived and well connected than ever before. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence and that’s precisely what you’ll get in this
encouraging talk, peer-reviewed and presented by Ruben Meerman who says the good old days are now.

Lightwave Stage, 2.15pm

AMY SHIRA TEITEL:
ASTRO-HISTORIAN
After discovering that men walked on the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, Amy set
out trying to understand how and why that happened. Her childhood curiosity gave way to an adult profession as a  spaceflight historian, because the more you try to understand the Moon landing the more complicated the answer gets.
Amy now shares her enthusiasm and curiosity as the blogger and vlogger behind Vintage Space. Come and find out what’s on the dark side of the moon, what Dyna-Soars have to do with space travel and other fascinating stories from space.

Lightwave Stage, 11am

CHRIS BALLARD:
FREEDOM CLASS GIANT DRONE RACING

Taking a trip into the history of Drone Racing, we will explore it from it's earliest days, when a handful of hackers connected through the internet and modified a Nintendo Wii controller into the earlier ancestors of drones, through to the modern day equivalents as they face phenomenal growth as a sport across the globe.
See how racing drones went from 45cm in size, down to 15cm, and then back up to 150cm as priorities shifted among the participants towards greater speed and visibility.

Lightwave Stage, 12pm
THE HEAT IS ON!
