HI HOPES

HI HOPES Early Intervention Programme was initiated in 2006 and has become the flagship community service project of the Centre for Deaf Studies. Home Interventionists are trained using the SKI HI curriculum from Utah State University, USA. Free culturally sensitive home based intervention, is offered to families with deaf or hard of hearing babies. The focus areas included: language development, communication strategies and emotional support to the family. The Deaf Mentor Programme allows families to have Deaf or hard of hearing role models, who also assist families with learning how to communicate with their children. The longitudinal research which we have from our extensive data base, assists us in contributing evidence based information to this field in South Africa.

In 2015, HI HOPES joined hands with THRIVE parent led support group to see a holistic family centrerd service offered to families. This year celebrated a decade of home intervention offered to South African Families, with over 2000 families having received free services.
