We are inviting all laity who will be serving on church committees in 2019 to come out to this training and get equipped to take on the task effectively. Expert workshop leaders will cover the basics for people newly elected and fresh tips and practical insights for leaders who are more experienced. We are inviting chairpersons, committee members, and pastors to join us for these training sessions designed to help you start the new year off right in your role to equip the church to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

We will be offering training in the following areas: Church Council; Evangelism; Finance; Marketing, Web Design, and Social Media; Missions and Service Projects; Stewardship; Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee; and Trustees.

1) Staff Pastor Parish Relationship Committee is the Ministry of Managing Staff – Rev. Mark Moore
Staff management is hard work and requires a lot of preparation followed by execution. It is frustrating when staff lack unity and go off in their own direction. When the S/PPRC is unwilling to hold each other and the staff accountable for poor performance, the church will soon be filled with a foul odor and discord.  S/PPRC members can get caught up in hidden agendas, alliances, and become paralyzed by the fear of conflict.

 

In this workshop you will learn what must be done to get organized and how to do the difficult task of managing staff to high performance. We are called to be good stewards of the staff resources for the sake of the Kingdom of God. This is hard, but vital work. Come and learn how to do it well.

Bio: Rev. Mark Moore has been serving in pastoral leadership for more than 40 years; additionally, he served as a member of the Air Force Reserve for 30 years, including being mobilized for over five years after 9/11/2001. During that time, he served in two strategic roles, including serving on the staff of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired with the rank of Colonel. Mark has served small country to large suburban churches. You will be blessed by his knowledge and experience.


2)  Board of Trustees: What Am I Responsible for Now? – Rev. John Laughlin (past President of the Conference Board of Trustees)
You have said, “yes” to serving, but may be wondering just what you are supposed to do. This is serious work, but it can also be fun and rewarding as you get to utilize your gifts to help the church be faithful to the mission of Christ. During this workshop you will gain clarity and direction related to how best to oversee and maintain all church property, equipment, investments, and resources. This will be a practical workshop that will address the nuts and bolts of property management and the consequences of neglect.

Bio: Rev. John Laughlin is a past President of the Conference Board of Trustees, has pastored church small to large multi-site, and currently is serving at Salem UMC in Manheim.


3) How Do We Do Missions? The Nuts and Bolts -- Panel Discussion with leaders from Cornwall UMC, Lampeter UMC, Impact Missions, and Support Connections of Lebanon County
Round table discussion with leaders of diverse skills and experiences in various types of missions work to help you and your church move forward with mission projects of your own.

4) Finance Committee: Best Practices for your Finance Committee – Mid-Atlantic Foundation with Frank Robert, Associate Director of Stewardship Education
This program will build a committee’s skills for developing line item and narrative budgets; moving toward two-year budget projections, church accounting and auditing procedures, fiduciary and legal policies, understanding the details of the UMC apportionment system, and investment management requirements.

Bio: Frank Robert is the Associate Director of the Mid-Atlantic United Methodist Foundation, a Faith Based Foundation teaching Generosity and Managing investments for organizations affiliated with the United Methodist Church. He is based out of the Baltimore Washington Conference and loves being able to help the diverse groups of churches. He earned a Bachelors in History and a Masters in Higher Education from the College of William and Mary and a Masters in Business Administration from Loyola University Maryland. He has served as a Teacher, Coach, College Administrator and a Medical Sales Representative. Frank is blessed with his wife Beth, who is a special needs school teacher, and two wonderful daughters.


5) Stewardship Committee:  Work Plans and Action Steps for Successful Annual, Capital, and Legacy Giving – Mid-Atlantic Foundation with Jack Brooks -- Executive Director and Rev. Kent Kroehler
This program will build a committee’s skills by providing monthly steps for your annual funding campaign; the process for planning, preparing, executing, and completing a successful capital campaign; and specific steps toward building a legacy of planned gifts in your church.

Bio: Jack Brooks is the Executive Director of the Mid-Atlantic United Methodist Foundation, a Faith Community Foundation promoting stewardship education and managing investments for individuals or organizations affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Prior to joining the Foundation, Jack had a 25-year career as a licensed Registered Representative and Vice President working with the investment firms of Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter. In 2002 he became a partner with Borer Denton and Associates, a private wealth management firm. Jack is a Certified Retirement Counselor (CRC) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He joined the Foundation as the Executive Director in 2008.

Rev. Dr. Kent Kroehler is a retired pastor in the United Methodist, with his last two appointments at First UMC, Lancaster City and Faith UMC, Lititz. He has been involved in the Mid-Atlantic Foundation as a board member and a facilitator for the Financial Leadership Academy; the District Board of Church Location and Building; the Anchorage Breakfast Ministry; the Sudan Rebirth Ministry; the Parish Resource Center; Have a Heart for Persons in the Criminal Justice System working on prison reform—and many other organizations focused on developing healthy communities and sharing the gospel. He also has a great deal of hands-on-experience leading capital campaigns for local churches.


6) Church / Ad Council / Leadership – Rev. Al Smith & Dave Conapitski
This session will review the basic responsibilities and make-up of the team ministry of the Administrative Church Board / Church Council—including the various options that are available for its structure. More generally we will examine the developing of leadership capacity and leading effective meetings.

Bio: Pastor Alan Smith serves as the Senior Pastor at Church of the Good Shepherd in Lebanon. He has served in numerous churches across the EPA, including in Bowmanstown, where he oversaw a church merger and a building program. Pastor Al is the former Chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry. He has a passion for worship and missions that informs all his ministry.

Mr. Dave Conapitski is the Chair of the Church Council at Church of the Good Shepherd and he, along with Pastor Al, have encouraged the leadership to lead with a greater sense of ownership of the mission and ministry of the church.


7) Education Committee: Developing Disciples of All Ages & All Week Long – Rev. Lisa Stine Flory & Rev. Jason Perkowski
We will provide practical examples of how to encourage discipleship and Bible Study across all ages throughout the week--including ways to coordinate Sermons, Sunday School, Youth Group, and Adult Bible Studies/Small Groups. We will also discuss how to develop or evaluate curriculum to ensure more holistic understandings of the Bible and its practical applications in our lives.

Bio: Rev. Lisa Stine Flory is Pastor of Equipping at Good Shepherd UMC in Lebanon. She oversees the Equipping Ministries of their church, including offering a program called “PLACE” to help members discover and use their gifts in service. Lisa has previously served as Director of Family Ministries, Director of Children’s Ministries, and as Youth Pastor.

Rev. Jason Perkowski is the Pastor at Faith & Oregon Community UMCs; Youth Pastor for a Collaborative Youth Ministry across 4 UMCs; and previously served as a Children's Director, public school teacher and professor.


8) Marketing and Media in Ministry – Pastor Kevin Kresge and Mr. Keith Reifsnyder
Workshop Description: In this workshop, we will discuss the basics of branding and how it can be effectively applied to your church. We will cover marketing, effective websites and their design, search engine optimization for churches, and social media, as well as necessary related policies like photo releases.

Bio: Rev. Kevin Kresge is a licensed local pastor in the West District, currently serving quarter-time at Bird in Hand UMC. Kevin works full-time as the Director of Digital Marketing at GRIT Marketing Group in York and Lancaster. Kevin spends his spare time with his wife Iris, son Tony (13) and their dog, Megan.
Mr. Keith Reifsnyder is a digital content creator and designer specializing in WordPress websites for churches. He is also the organist at Lititz United Methodist Church and is married to the District Resource Assistant, Kristin.


9) Evangelism – Title: Evangelism: "Being Excited About Sharing Your Faith with Others."
We live in a pluralistic society and all faiths are considered equally valued. As a result, many followers of Christ are hesitant to share their faith with others for fear of being intrusive or rejected. However, Christ calls us to be missional to fulfill the great commission highlighted in Matthew 28:19-20. This workshop will assist believers in finding comfort and enthusiasm in sharing the gospel to our 21st century culture that desperately needs to hear and experience it. This workshop will be based on our ministry experiences and gleanings from the book, Sharing Jesus Without Freaking Out by Alvin L. Reid.

Bio: Dr. Brenda Ingram-Wallace is an accomplished teacher, scholar, and community activist. She is currently serving as a clinical psychologist, Associate of Psychology, and Director of Counseling Services at Albright College.

Rev. Dr. Quentin Wallace is currently serving as Senior Pastor at Covenant United Methodist Church in Lancaster.
