Debbie Cote, MSN, RN, CNN, NE-BC, has been a nephrology nurse for 34 years; she currently works for the University of Virginia Health System as the Administrator for the Dialysis Program. She oversees 11 chronic facilities, 4 home programs and 4 acute programs in Central Virginia. She actively volunteers her time for professional organizations. She is a Past President of NRAA and continues to serve on the Board of Directors. She is also member and the Nephrologists Transforming Dialysis Safety Coalition. Debbie has previously served on both the Medical Review Board, and most recently the Board of Directors for Network 5. She is a Past President of the Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission and still actively participates in the development of certification exams.

 
Jim Curtis

Jim has more than 45 years of experience as a dialysis technician, including taking care of his mother on home nocturnal dialysis in the early years of dialysis. He is currently an independent consultant on technical issues related to dialysis. He has worked as a technician in all aspects of dialysis, including patient care, bio-med, Area Manager for FMC, and co-founder of Outset Medical.

Jim served in many roles with NANT, including NW Regional VP, President and Director of Education. He has written multiple articles relating to the technical aspects of dialysis, and was the editor of NANT’s Water Treatment for Hemodialysis.

He has also played for the Houston Texans, Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2016. He graduated from Notre Dame with two degrees, one in Economics and Policy and the other in Political Science. Lisa is responsible for the technical oversight of the acute portion of DaVita’s biomedical operations as well as technical training and education programs. Over her 18 year career in dialysis, Lisa spent 15 years in technical field operations. She has worked with many multi-disciplinary teams to collaborate and implement programs, technology, and service programs to improve partnership and the culture of safety.

Lisa is focusing on technical development opportunities to better serve our internal teammates, our external partnerships, and improve the quality of life for our patients.

Ercelene Kinnebrew is a Registered Nurse and business owner. With an extensive background in nursing; experienced in Psychiatric, Pediatric nursing and now Nephrology nursing (Dialysis) at DaVita for the past 18 years. She has worked in a variety of roles within DaVita from Clinical Services Specialist, Facility Administrator and currently as a Clinical Education Manager focused on In-Center Hemodialysis training and Educator facilitation. Her passion for helping people transcends her career in healthcare; volunteering to coach students in the Executive MBA program at a local University and sponsoring school supplies for children in her community and abroad.

Kathy Merritt, LCSW holds her masters degree in social work from West Virginia School of Social Work. She has over 30 years of clinical experience working in the outpatient Hemodialysis setting. Kathy has worked for Satellite Healthcare for 18 years and is currently the social work services manager for Satellite Healthcare. She helps in training new social workers, is a subject matter expert for the center social workers, and presents at Satellite’s New Employee orientation regularly on Boundaries and Professionalism and Dealing with Challenging patients. She has also presented at National Kidney Foundation, and at the Western BONENT seminar. Kathy is past Co-Chair of the CNSW of Northern California, and active member with the National Kidney Foundation.

Stuart Mott is a vascular access nurse in St Louis. He has dedicated the last 15 years to improve cannulation techniques. He has written and published 6 articles in Nephrology Nursing Journal and will share some of this with us today. He graduated from the University of Nebraska. He has been travel nurse for the last 5 years, he has been in over 138 clinics where he trains staff as well as patients in cannulation techquines He has two web pages that he helps patients as well as staff on problems associate with cannulation technique a passed board member of Net-Work 12 Medical Review Board, and has given mutably prestation’s at the annual dialysis conference and the national kidney foundation and was a member Fistula First Breakthrough Initiative in 2009 where touch cannulation and cushion cannulation was add to fistula first best practices.

Mark has been the editor for NN&I since 1989. Last year, the magazine was acquired by Slack Inc. , a New Jersey-based publisher of over a dozen medical news publications focused on cardiology, endocrinology, orthopedics, family/internal medicine, and other specialties. NN&I’s new website is www.healio.com/nephrology.

Nephrology News & Issues is a monthly magazine and website that addresses the legislative, regulatory, economic, and social issues impacting dialysis and transplant care. In 2008, Mark won the President’s Award from the National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists and in 2015 was one of several individuals picked for the American Association of Kidney Patients’ annual. Medal of Excellence Award. Mark has also won the Richard Berkowitz Memorial Award from Home Dialyzors United. He has given numerous presentations on legislative and regulatory issues at the Annual Dialysis Conference, the National Kidney Foundation, and other kidney care programs. Most recently, he gave a talk at the NKF of Indiana annual conference on telehealth and home dialysis.

Heather has more than 20 years’ experience in the dialysis industry. She is currently A Biomedical Support Services Manager for Fresenius Medical Care. Her primary focus is Home Therapies. Prior to Fresenius, she was the Director of Technical Services for Liberty Dialysis. She is certified on multiple types of equipment to include 4 different dialysis machines and 5 plus different RO systems. Prior to her role in the biomedical field, Heather worked as a Dialysis Technician and received both her CCHT and CHT certifications.

Heather has been involved in multiple organizations that promote and support the dialysis Technician/Technologist and has held multiple leadership positions with the National Association of Nephrology Technicians to include President, North West VP and is the Current Secretary/ Treasurer. One of her major projects for NANT was updating and getting the New Water Treatment for Dialysis book published. She has also worked on multiple projects for National Kidney Foundation to include Hope Street, Seize CKD celebrate collaboration, CEU/CME Review Committee, KDOQI Home Dialysis Summit.

I have been active in NANT as  Vice Pres 2005, President 2006-2007, test committee member for the CCHT,CCHT-A  Certification examination, and Clinical/ Technical Board Member of The NNCC 2011-2019, and on The Executive Committee of the NKF CNNT.I have presented Dialysis Vascular Access topics at NANT, NKF, ADC,ASDIN and VASA I also support and present at the Columbia SC Nant Chapter .I have also been on Symposium Committees for  NANT,ADC,VASA, and ASDIN.  I am currently the Associate Co-Chair for The Associate program of ASDIN and VASA 2019.Currently I am the Vascular Access Coordinator for The Emory Dialysis Clinics of Emoryhealthcare in Atlanta, Ga.

Since 1988 I have worked for Fresenius Medical Care in various Technical and Product Management roles. At different points, I was responsible for Dialyzer Reprocessing Systems, Water Treatment, Dialyzers, Bloodlines, and Concentrates.

Tia was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and has three wonderful brothers. She moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1988 and started working in hemodialysis in January of 1993 as a Nephrology Clinical Technician with the Regional Kidney Disease Program which was acquired by DaVita. She went on to work as a Clinical Specialist for Minntech Renal Systems, now Medivators, from 2001 until 2006. In 2006, she returned to DaVita full time as an educator and is currently an Education Manager and CHT. In her spare time, Tia enjoys spending time with family, friends and her beloved pets, traveling around the world, and volunteering in under-served areas with a focus on ESRD patients.

My name is Marco Santana, 42 years old and I am Registered Nurse and Certified Medical Interpreter at DaVita Dialysis in Worcester, Massachusetts. I was born in New Jersey of Puerto Rican decent, raised in Massachusetts. I am currently working towards my Bachelors in Nursing. Before deciding to go follow a career in the medical field, I was a private school director and made great use of my degree in Early Childhood Education. I am a home hemodialysis patient at DaVita. In my spare time I bake and decorate wedding and birthday cakes as a hobby.

Dori Schatell is Executive Director of the non-profit Medical Education Institute, which conducts research and develops evidence-based educational materials to help people with kidney disease live as fully as possible. She has worked in the renal field for 30 years, during which she has written and edited hundreds of educational pieces for patients and professionals, including the original DOQI anemia guidelines, the Core Curriculum for the Dialysis Technician, Kidney School, and many others, and directed development of the Home Dialysis Central website. She is co-author, with Dr. John Agar, of the book, Help, I Need Dialysis! and the decision aid, My Life, My Dialysis Choice.

Dr. Tej Singh is a vascular/endovascular surgeon trained at Stanford University. He received his medical degree from the University of Chicago. Dr. Singh has a very active vascular surgery practice in Northern California where he concentrates on improving vascular access care. Dr. Singh is an active member of the Society for Vascular Surgery and VASA. Dr. Singh is also the Founder and CEO of Fist Assist Devices, LLC a startup based in Silicon Valley, CA USA. Fist Assist has created a novel, patent protected device to assist in vein identification and enhancement for eventual venipuncture or vein dilation of fistulas. This novel device is considered a global game changer and has the support of many international key opinion leaders.

Desiree serves as a renal dietitian, Regional Point and an EPIC Mentor (Engaging Patients in their Care) for DaVita. As an EPIC mentor, Desiree trains dietitians on motivational interviewing skills. She has over five years of nutrition counseling experience with various medical conditions. Having advanced training in motivational interviewing allows her to dig deeper into a patient’s current lifestyle to uncover underlying factors that may be impacting them from achieving their goals. Desiree provides nutrition counseling utilizing the MI patient centered approach to educate, empower and form a partnership with her patients. Desiree’s biggest reward is to see her patients reach their goals and become their best self.

 
John Sweeny BS

John Sweeny began his career in the field of dialysis in 1968 as a Field service Engineer for the Milton Roy Co. servicing the first fixed proportioning dialysis system in North America called the Model A. During the 1970’s, John progressed from performing field service to presenting technical training programs for technicians. His programs included not only the company’s equipment, but also the general science that related to dialysis therapy. He has been presenting lectures for the National Association of Nephrology Technicians/Technologists for 30 years and has received the association’s James T. Boag Lifetime Achievement Award, Education Award, and President’s Award for his education activities. John retired from Baxter Healthcare in December of 2009 but remains active lecturing for the dialysis community. 2018 marked his 50th year in the dialysis community.

Curtis Woods is the Director of Technical Services for Fresenius Medical Care North America. Curtis is responsible for a nationwide field service organization, technical training program and a 24 / 7 technical support call center. Over his career, Curtis has worked in quality, research and development, operations and project management for new product introductions. He has a passion for cross-functional collaboration and introducing new technologies to simplify service and improve customer experiences. His current focus is to improve the interdepartmental relationships to assure all projects have a keen focus on design for manufacturability and design for serviceability along with increasing the use of technology in his service organization.
