Desert Foot 2013 Abstracts/Poster Competition

There will be three (3) submission categories again this year, Resident, Non-Resident and Sponsor. The Resident and Non-Resident categories will be judged for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winner with prizes as listed below. The Sponsor category will not be judged or awarded prizes.


Suitable Topics

The Desert Foot Conference focuses on the latest treatments, technology and processes in diabetic limb salvage and lower extremity wound care. The Desert foot Conference is open to attendance by the entire worldwide podiatry, diabetes, and wound care professions. Topics suitable for this Abstract/Poster competition include:

    • Diabetic limb salvage
    • Neurological and vascular disease affecting the lower extremity
    • Diabetic wound care issues
    • Evidence-based standards of diabetic wound care
    • Cost-effective diabetic foot care
    • Preventative foot care for at risk populations
    • Any other topic relating to primary treatment or treatment of complications pertaining to at risk diabetes and wound care patients.

Original research, retrospective or meta-analysis are all acceptable.


Abstract Requirements

IMPORTANT: Please review the following before you complete and submit your application. All applications are limited to a total of no more than 300 words (sections 5-8 below) and must include:

  • Title Try to keep title as concise as possible. Capitalize first letter of each major word.
  • Topic Category See above
  • List of Authors List primary author first, all other contributors should be included in order of their degree of contribution to the finished work. Include degrees and affiliations for each author.
  • Submission Category Resident, Non-Resident or Sponsor
  • Aims/Objectives/Goal/Purpose What does the research intend to demonstrate?
  • Materials and Methods What methods and procedures were used to document and analyze your findings?
  • Results Discuss the results of the study and analysis.
  • Conclusions Authors conclusions and opinions are presented in this section

NOTE: You must use a Times Roman 12 font or similar size.


All poster presenters must be registered for the meeting ( Abstracts/Posters will be peer-reviewed by a committee chosen by the Desert Foot Advisory Committee.


Scientific method Are the methods appropriate for the type of study? Are the statistics or comparisons meaningful or related to the outcomes?

Perceived importance Do the results or presentation have any meaning to everyday practice? Do the results suggest changing clinical practice? Are the results preliminary requiring further investigation?

Innovation Is the study unique? Does it offer a different or new perspective?

Evidence Level What level of evidence does this study/presentation represent? Is it high enough to consider using in patient care? Does it require further investigation before using in patient care?

Awards will be announced at the Conference on Friday, November 22, 2013 before Lunch in the Lecture Hall.

Resident and Non-Resident

There will be 3 awards for each category as follows:

1st Place $1,000

2nd Place $ 500

3rd Place $ 250

Sponsor category posters will not be judged and are not eligible for prizes.

Please check in at the Desert Foot Registration Desk. They can help you with any questions and also supply you with push pins to hang your posters. The posterboards are 48” x 96”, 4ft by 8 ft, so that is the maximum size you’d want to make the posters. There is a frame and the area inside the frame is 45" x 91". Hang your poster on the poster frame labeled with your name and abstract name. (Poster/Abstract) Posters should be hung before 10:00 AM on Wednesday, November 20th and will remain in place until adjournment of the Conference at 5:00 PM on November 22nd. If you want to keep your poster, please remove it before 6PM or it may be discarded.
