WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
Some critics have argued that the current graduate-level global health curriculum does not always prepare students to meet the needs of global health employers, particularly in the area of monitoring and evaluation. On the other hand, academics know it is very difficult to update curriculum quickly when global health practice evolves. How can employers and funders share their needs and concerns with global health educators? Are some of the skills required by global health employers already taught at universities in other departments? This workshop is a follow-on to last year’s USAID GHFP II and University of Maryland’s “global/local” preconference session in which many agreed that the artificial divide between global health and community public health may unnecessarily limit the learning opportunities available to students on campus.

An interactive dialog among faculty, academic program managers, employers and funders is critical to ensuring that universities are training future generations of practitioners in the way that best serves the critical goals of global health and ensures that the students we graduate are able to find employment in the field they trained for. The pre-conference session will feature representatives of global health employers and major funders who will discuss what skills they value in employees and any short falls they see.  Finally, participants will have a chance to hear from global health faculty members who have developed innovative ways to link teaching and practice.

WORKSHOP GOALS:
1. To learn what knowledge, skills, and attitudes global health employers and funders value in potential employees and how these relate to success in today’s global health practice environment.
2. To identify any shortfalls in global health education that may leave students unprepared to enter the global health workforce and what training is necessary to address these shortfalls.
3. To learn about innovative ways some global health programs are adapting their curriculum and experiential learning opportunities to make students “practice ready.”
