Gordon Black
babyHydro
Gordon spent the first 27 years of his working life with British Telecom in a variety of roles including marketing, sales, product management, bid management and business development. In October 2008 Gordon and his business partner Nick Forrest founded babyHydro. The business is exclusively focused on developing run-of-river hydropower schemes for landowners and communities. It has recently expanded its range to include domestic scale (pico) hydropower solutions. Gordon also delivers, in conjunction with David Williams, the retired CEO of the BHA, the British Hydropower Association's training course. Gordon has an Honours Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Strathclyde University and a MBA in Strategic Marketing.

Hydro Survey Ltd
This is Chris's second period as Chairman of the BHA, which he enjoys because it allows contact with established companies in the industry and newcomers, as well as the chance to meet industry influencers and regulators. Chris has been part of the UK hydro scene since 1994. Employed by key players in the sector, he set up Hydro Survey Ltd (HSL) in 2012 and has been assisting and advising developers, investors and other parties since. HSL is just as interested in a 2kW stream powered scheme as a 20MW storage project and every variation on the hydro theme in between. Chris has a wealth of experience in specifying appropriate solutions to project developers and providing input to technical, concept and review of hydro projects.
 
Mark Collinson

Mark is WRAP’s Energy Sector Specialist, having worked in and around the energy industry in some capacity since 1991.  Highly knowledgeable and very practical, Mark’s drive is to ensure renewable energy projects are feasible in their technical design and delivery schedule.  He joined WRAP in 2006, and has been a core member of the successful RCEF team since launch to date having been involved in the assessment of over 100 applications and 60 live projects.  Mark has a degree in Geology and Environmental Science, a Post Graduate Diploma in Wastes Management and is currently writing his dissertation for an MSc. He is a member of the Association of Professional Project Managers, an associate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, a student member of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management and sits on the Renewable Energy Association’s Community Energy group.
 
Andy Crumley

Andy Crumley, Commercial Contract Manager for North East, Western Isles and Large Distribution Connections. >Andy has over 19 years of experience within SSE, having held numerous positions throughout both the supply and distribution business.  His current role within SHEPD as a Zonal Contract Manager sees him cover all generation connections in the North East and the Western Isles as well as all large scale generation connections within SHEPD’s area. In his spare time he is studying for a City & Guilds in Electrical Engineering.  He is also an enthusiastic golfer.
 
Fergus Ewing MSP

Mr Ewing was born in Glasgow in September 1957 and was educated at Edinburgh's Loretto School and then attended Glasgow University. He was elected as MSP for Inverness East, Nairn & Lochaber in 1999 and re-elected in 2003 and 2007. Prior to being elected, he ran his own law practice and developed SNP policy on small business and other matters as well as serving on the party's national executive. He has served on a number of Scottish Parliament committees including the Subordinate Legislation Committee, Enterprise and Lifelong Learning, Finance, Local Government and Transport committee and was previously Shadow Minister for Transport, Tourism & Telecommunications. He is the son of Winnie, formerly the MSP for Highlands and Islands and MEP for Scotland, and brother of Annabelle, MSP for Mid Scotland and Fife. A former member of the Lomond Mountain Rescue Team, Mr Ewing has climbed around two thirds of Scotland's Munroes. He was also a keen runner and has taken part in several marathons, including New York. He enjoys listening to jazz and playing the piano in his spare time.

David has been with Scottish Natural Heritage since 2006, currently working in Policy and Advice - Bryophytes, Lichens and Funghi. He works in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens and has been  a Research Associate since October 2013.
 
Simon Hamlyn

Simon, who is a 3-Dimensional Designer by qualification, comes from a family of architects - both parents and his Grandfather. Simon's career has embraced international branded drinks, hotels & leisure, electronic entertainment, magazine publishing, internet businesses and, over the past 12 years, consumer membership organisations. Simon is based in Bangor on Dee, just south of Chester, with two terriers and two young children. He enjoys, when time permits, a love of music, cricket, football, skiing, walking, running and game shooting.
 
John Heaton

John is an electrical engineer by training with a background in telecommunications who has gone on to develop a track record in the hydro industry with particular emphasis on project delivery, system design and performance optimisation.  John’s first encounter with hydro was the operation, maintenance and refurbishment of a number of poorly performing schemes that had been constructed during the time of the RO.  With the advent of the FIT John has managed the development and construction of a number of new schemes in Scotland as well as the refurbishment of a number of poorly performing FIT schemes.  Most recently John has been developing Glen Hydro Development’s portfolio in Scotland, working closely with GHD’s partner Hydropol, who provide finance and design expertise.

David Henry is a chartered Quantity Surveyor specialising in providing capital allowances advice to commercial property owners. He established Henry Consulting in the autumn of 2011 following more than a decade working for a leading national capital allowances consultancy. David has worked on a range of hydro schemes including high-head run-of-river, dam storage and projects that use screw generators. In addition to hydro, he has prepared capital allowances claims across a broad cross-section of market sectors, including commercial offices, retail, industrial & distribution, food & drink manufacturing, primary & secondary healthcare, hotels, pubs, nightclubs and restaurants. Away from work, David is a keen hill walker and snowboards, and also has a passion for cars and motor sport. 
 
Euan Hogg

Euan Hogg formed Water Engine Technologies in February 2014 to develop a new form of low-head hydropower generation called the Water Engine, which uses a novel hydraulic system to generate renewable electricity in run-of-river and tidal environments at high efficiencies.

 
Paul Holden

Paul Holden, who has over 20 years experience within the architectural and construction industry, formed Peak Architects in 2012. Having studied at both Manchester and Oxford, he continued his training by working as an Urban Designer in Montpellier, France and then a further year working directly for International award winning architect Kiyonori Kikutake in Tokyo, Japan. Subsequently his career has enabled him to work both nationally and on the continent in delivering high quality ‘award winning’ residential and commercial projects for both individuals and large companies. Paul is married with one child; he relaxes by fell running unfortunately displaying more enthusiasm than talent.

 
Nigel Holmes

Nigel is CEO of SHFCA, the trade association for development and deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in Scotland. SHFCA is recognised as one of the most active hydrogen & fuel cell industry associations in Europe. SHFCA now has over 75 members, mostly based in Scotland but with an increasing number of members based overseas. Nigel also leads the Transport sub-Group of Scotland’s 2020 Climate Group, represents SHFCA interests on the Renewable Industry Advisory Group (RIAG), and is a steering group member for both the Scottish Transport Emissions Partnership and Green Business Fife.
 
Charles Jardine

Charles was born in Canterbury Kent and started fishing at the age of three before attending Bethany School and then art colleges in Canterbury and Medway. He started journalism on local newspapers within the Kent Messenger Group at the age of nineteen and moved to be an angling columnist for the Daily Telegraph plus he produced contributions for Trout Fisherman, Game Fisher and Trout and Salmon. Charles then embarked on a new career in angling politics: becoming the Angling Director for the Countryside Alliance [CA], creating the ground breaking "Water Matters" pack dedicated to taking fishing into the classroom for school children aged between 11 and 14. Charles maintains his association with the CA and now the Countryside Alliance Foundation, its charitable educational arm, as Angling Advisor, taking Fishing into schools as part of the ASDAN scheme, whilst also keeping in touch with the important politics surrounding the sport’s future.
 
Julian Jones

Julian Jones volunteers for Water21, a non-profit Agenda 21 organisation. In 1984 he resigned as UK sales director for Bauer (water & waste engineering) to address public health issues linked with sewage contaminated aerosols spraying from weirs, many originally built for hydropower. He developed sustainable drainage, or 'SUDS' (sewage and rainwater soft engineering) to resolve this, demonstrating this on a BBC TV programme in 1991, and prepared the first UK Catchment Based Approach (CaBA) in 1993 for Stroud District Council. Water21 is in partnership with the Hydrocity project in Iran, restoring ancient Qanats featuring small hydropower. He represented Coventry University at the Parliamentary Inquiry into Flooding in 2014 and has honourary posts at Gloucestershire NHS, Cranfield Health and Ossberger.
 
John Lithgow

A Mechanical Engineering Graduate from Edinburgh, John started his career working in the automotive sector for Jaguar Cars. After moving back to Scotland to work in Oil & Gas engineering, he started to look in his free time at upgrading the off-grid 30kW hydro scheme on the family farm on the Isle of Jura. As the project progressed he moved full time to lead all aspects of the hydro development from environmental scoping and grid access negotiation, through design and planning, to finance and project management. Since the completion of the 2MW Inver scheme in 2012 he has gone on to develop and construct a further three schemes in mainland Argyll with a combined capacity of 1.6MW.
 
Adrian Loening

Adrian has worked in renewable energy since 1980 when he was a technician at the Edinburgh University Wave Power Research Group. He has an honours degree in Engineering Design and Appropriate Technology from the University of Warwick. Having worked in the field of solar refrigeration and solar heating, he began working in the landfill gas industry in 1990 and the hydro industry in 2006. He is currently the Managing Director of Mór Hydro Ltd,  a technical consultancy and project developer. The company currently owns (in JV) two hydro schemes in Scotland and has provided technical consultancy on more than 46 hydro projects in Scotland. The company also provides technical due diligence services to major high street banks and supervises lender interests in micro-hydro schemes.

Bob is an engineer specialising in the manipulation of thermal energy, but with good mechanical engineering foundations. He is currently CEO of Natural Energy Wyre Ltd.
 
Dr Phil Maher

Dr Phil Maher is Managing Director of Hydromatch Ltd. Working as a teacher he developed a keen interest in renewable energy design. A PhD followed on the application of hydro for rural power. During this study, he developed software for the design and modelling of new schemes which his company have been now been using for 10 years to implement UK hydropower. This also laid the foundation for Hydromatch Online, a service which allows users anywhere to begin project development.

Roger has held a number of posts since achieving an Honours degree in Marine Biology in 1980, gaining broad experience in all marine renewables. He has worked with MSLOT since 2010 and is regulator of licensing for marine renewables.

Andrew Menzies is a Chartered Civil Engineer and passionate environmentalist. He has worked in environmental engineering and consultancy for over 25 years, focusing on renewable energy projects since 2008.  Andrew owns and operates 350 Energy Limited, a small UK based renewable energy developer, installer and environmental advisor.  The business focuses on the design and construction of micro renewable energy projects including PV and hydro together with advisory work in sustainability, biomass and due diligence. Andrew is a former Managing Partner at Earth Capital Partners (ECP) a Private Equity firm focused on renewable energy and forestry.  He is also a former Partner at ERM and Associate Director at KPMG.

For the last few years Steve has led Triodos Bank's activity in the hydro sector with a focus on providing non-recourse project finance.  He has worked with a diverse range of customers, including professional developers, investment funds, farmer/landowners and community groups.  Alongside his work in the hydro sector he has led the project financing of a wide range of renewable energy projects covering onshore wind and ground mounted solar ranging from 500kW schemes up to 40MW club deals covering the whole of the UK & Ireland.

 
Dr Justin Neal

Justin Neal is a Senior Associate at Aaron & Partners, specialising in Environmental, Planning and Regulatory issues. Before taking up this role, he worked for Irwin Mitchell, where he headed the Planning, Environment and Local Government section of the firm’s Public Law Department. He was previously the Head Solicitor at a non-governmental organisation (NGO) specialising in water law and pollution cases. Justin has run high-profile cases relating to the Water Framework Directive, access to Environmental Information, Renewable Energy including wind turbines and hydropower, Environmental Impact Assessment, Town and Village Green registration, Water Resources and general Planning law. Chambers and Partners 2015 include Justin as a “notable practitioner” with “notable expertise in nuisance cases, water law and European environmental legislation. Justin writes a regular article for the Environmental Law Monthly and is a member of the United Kingdom Environmental Law Association.

He has been a director at Derwent Hydro Developments Ltd since 2003, working on the consenting and detailed design of small-scale hydro schemes throughout the UK. He wrote the Guide to UK Mini-Hydro Developments available on the BHA web-site.

Judith is the co-founder and Project Director of All-Energy, the UK's largest renewables show, held annually in Glasgow (4-5 May 2016). the conference is her particular responsibility and with nine parallel streams is sets out to cover all forms of renewable and sustainable energy (the BHA puts together the hydro session, working with the organisers and using suggestions submitted in response to the call for papers as well as invited speakers) and energy efficiency/management, and it also has special sessions for community schemes and the farming/landowning community that are of particular interest to BHA members. The Call for Papers is open until just before Christmas an can be found on the All-Energy website at www.all-energy.co.uk - now's the time to make your submission! 8,250 attended All-Energy 2015, with 450+ exhibiting companies (hydro exhibitors very welcome) and an equal number of speakers.
 
Simon Pattullo

Simon has worked in SEPA for fifteen years, starting in its planning liaison department, moving to pollution control and regulation of water resources; and he has been involved in hydropower since 2008.  The Hydropower Permitting Team was assembled in order to manage the influx in CAR applications felt since 2011, and Simon led this team in the south-west of Scotland, until it was stepped down earlier this year.

 
Mike Pedley
Welsh water / Dwr Cymru

Mike’s role with Welsh Water covers all aspects of their energy strategy: energy purchasing, optimisation and generation as well as their energy and carbon reporting. Five years ago Welsh Water’s only generated 2% of their own consumption requirements and this year that will reach over 20%; about half of which will come from hydro. Last year Mike led Welsh Water’s acquisition of hydro assets from Infinis Hydro and these are now incorporated into Welsh Water’s expanding generation portfolio. Mike’s background includes commercial, technical and environmental work, much of it in the Water Industry with Yorkshire Water, Kelda and now Welsh Water. He has long held an interest in hydro and sees it as an important part of Welsh Water’s generation mix. He lives in the Yorkshire Pennines in a valley of long-gone water powered woollen mills, works in Wales and when not driving between the two is a keen fell runner and orienteer.

Angus Robertson

Angus Robertson has worked for Ardtornish Estate, Morvern, since 1985. He started thinking about hydro as soon as he arrived and discovered that it rained in the west highlands. He commissioned the first scheme, (700 kW run of river) in 1996 and he and the estate have been at the forefront of the recent period of hydro revolution, building three schemes with a capacity of 3MW. Angus is also a director of his local community development trust who seek to develop community hydro in their local forest under the Forestry Commissions NFLS scheme.

 
Jo Scott

Jo is a CFD engineer with over 20 years experience of fluid flow modelling across a wide range of industries.  Starting out in the oil and gas business he then spent many years working in motorsport aerodynamics before branching out into CFD consultancy on products as diverse as coffee machines, asthma inhalers and Olympic cycling helmets.  During this time he has seen CFD analysis develop from a niche application to a widely used engineering design tool. He joined Gilkes in 2013 and has been instrumental in building the research and development group that is now working on all aspects of Gilkes hydro business.

 
Garry Sharples

After qualifying as an Environmental Health Officer in 1995, Garry has worked in the environmental sector for Local Authority, Higher Education and  the National Trust. For the past 4 years, he has been increasingly involved in helping the Trust deliver its 2020 objective of 50% renewable energy.  Working as part of an internal renewable energy team, he  takes the lead in the Lake District for site identification, design and consenting of hydropower schemes. When he’s not getting his feet wet looking for new projects, he has two small children to keep him busy and when time permits, enjoys mountain biking, sport, wildlife photography (especially birds) and does voluntary work for conservation bodies and schools. 

 

 
Tim Simon

Tim has worked on the Feed-in Tariff Scheme for three and a half years. Much of this time has been spent handling applications and queries regarding the ROO-FIT application process. He has also been involved in developing the processes and implementing new policy decisions, such as the introduction of Preliminary Accreditation. While working across all the renewable technologies supported under the FiT scheme, he has dealt with a number of applications for complex and unique hydro developments.
 
David Standingford

David Standingford is a technology leader and manager with experience in the UK, Australia and the USA, who works as a Technology Lead with the Centre for Modelling and Simulation (CFMS).  Previously, David worked as a lecturer in mathematics and fluid dynamics at the University of Adelaide, as a postdoctoral researcher on the NASA Microgravity Programme at the University of Delaware, and most recently at BAE Systems Advanced Technology Centre as the Theme Technology Leader for Design and Materials Technology, responsible for Computational Engineering, IT Strategy, Materials Science and Stealth.  He is also Co-Founder and Director of Zenotech Ltd; a member of the EPSRC College and the National Physical Laboratory Materials and Modelling working group and leads the ERCOFTAC UK Pilot Centre.

 
Stuart Stephens

After graduating in Politics from Nottingham University, Stuart spent several years with Unilever before working in commercial roles for other consumer goods businesses. For the last five years Stuart has been Commercial Director at NFPA leading the team as the business grows its e-POWER and e-ROC on-line auction platforms for the selling of generators’ renewable power and ROCs. Outside of work Stuart is married, living in Yorkshire and spending most of his spare time with his wife and two children - but also finding the odd hour or two to train for the Yorkshire marathon.
 
Richard Taylor

Richard M Taylor has been involved in the water and energy sectors since 1985. He became a founding Board member of the International Hydropower Association (IHA) in 1995, and has served as its executive director since 2001 (CEO since 2014). Along with water and energy, his interests include climate and sustainability. A graduate in Earth Science/Water Resources, with postgraduate studies in hydropower engineering, environmental assessment and renewable energy systems, he has written and edited numerous technical papers and periodicals on hydropower and dams, and has been engaged in United Nations initiatives on water (WWDR and UNEP), energy (UNIDO and UNDESA) and climate change (UNESCO and IPCC). He has also participated in the work of the World Bank Group, International Renewable Energy Alliance, REN21, International Energy Agency, World Energy Council and World Water Council, and is a Fellow of the Energy Institute (UK).

 
Peter Tse

Peter Tse’s vision is to offer sustainable solutions to the environmental, economic and social problems that threaten our planet. In 2011, he began to search for a way to reduce carbon emissions and , in the process, devised an innovative method of combining existing and new technologies to capture and store energy from a range of renewable sources. A successful restaurant entrepreneur, Peter came to the UK from Hong Kong and ended up staying. Growing up, he lived and worked on the family farm in a coastal area and it was this sustainable way of life that inspired him.
 
Prof. David Williams

David Williams has been involved in the hydropower sector for 41 years. Trained as a mechanical engineer, he worked for Gilbert Gilkes and Gordon Ltd. as Sales Engineer to Manager of the Hydropower Department. He later moved into export promotion setting up and managing a regional office for South Asia and South East Asia, based in MalaysiaFrom 2000 he was an Export Promoter operating as the link between the British hydropower industry and the overseas trade section of the British Government (UKTI).  He then moved to the British Hydropower Association as its Chief Executive until the end of 2014. David is engaged as a Visiting Professor at the University of Edinburgh School of Engineering. He runs an annual ten-week inter-disciplinary group course for 4th Year MEng undergraduates on the design of a hydro scheme from rainfall to selling energy. On behalf of the BHA he also jointly operates one and two-day hydropower training courses.
