New York (February 22, 2018) -- The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA), the leading professional organization of independent nonfiction writers, announced that there will be a Gala event in celebration of ASJA’s 70th anniversary on May 17 that will serve as a celebratory gathering of industry VIPs.

The event is scheduled for the evening prior to the start of the 2018 ASJA Conference in New York and will support ASJA’s 70th Anniversary capital campaign. Longtime ASJA member, Estelle Erasmus, host and curator of the podcast, ASJA Direct: Inside Intel on Getting Published and Paid Well and last year’s New York conference chair, will chair the gala, which will be held from 6-8 p.m. May 17th at the exclusive, luxurious Steelcase Penthouse, overlooking Columbus Circle and Central Park at 4 Columbus Circle.

ASJA’S 70th Anniversary campaign is designed to celebrate ASJA’s long tenure, as well as support the organization’s first-ever capital campaign to strengthen the ASJA Educational Foundation. The 70th Anniversary Capital Campaign has been created so that the ASJA Educational Foundation can be developed into a hub for all nonfiction writers—including those with emerging voices from diverse and underserved communities—providing extensive professional growth via mentoring, coaching and peer networking. The ASJA Educational Foundation is a known resource that provides scholarships, conferences, podcasts, videocasts, and virtual networking among peers and clients, and other specialized niche courseworks focused on creating quality journalistic content.

The event—open for registration to ASJA members and nonmembers— will offer food, beverages and wine, and will have editors in attendance as well as an opportunity to win a mystery raffle prize.

“This Gala is a way that we can get ASJA members, editors, and other top professionals together in a beautiful location, to celebrate ASJA’s vast and prestigious history,” says ASJA President Sherry Paprocki. “I am pleased that one of ASJA’s super volunteers, Estelle Erasmus, agreed to chair this special event, which will kick off the New York City conference, and continue to elevate ASJA’s voice within the industry.”

“I’m looking forward to bringing ASJA’s members, board members, and VIPs together for a Gala celebration event, that will demonstrate just how excited ASJA is about its past, present and future as the go-to voice and resource for working freelance writers,” said Erasmus.
