|ACON is a New South Wales based health promotion organisation specialising in HIV prevention, HIV support and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) health.
Established in 1985 as the AIDS Council of NSW, ACON’s mission is to end HIV transmission among gay and homosexually active men, and promote the lifelong health of LGBTI people and people with HIV.
ACON provides services throughout NSW through its head office in Sydney, its offices in several key regional locations and through partnerships with service providers and community groups throughout the state. ACON is primarily funded by the NSW Government through the NSW Ministry of Health and its work forms an integral part of the NSW Government’s HIV Strategy.
Victorian AIDS Council (VAC) is one of Australia’s largest HIV organisations, the Victorian AIDS Council (VAC) works to reduce HIV transmissions by promoting the health and wellbeing of gay men and people living with HIV. VAC also works with LGBTI communities In Victoria to improve health outcomes for sexually and gender diverse communities.
Formed in 1983 as a central part of the Victorian community response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, VAC continues to lead the response by providing a range of services, such as prevention education, treatment and care of people living with HIV, and counselling services. Community engagement has always been at the heart of VAC’s work—as a volunteer-driven organisation, VAC maintains strong links to the proud history of HIV advocacy in Victoria, and to the state’s LGBTI communities.
VAC delivers a comprehensive AOD (alcohol and other drugs) program, including health promotion campaigns, counselling and care and recovery services, and therapeutic groups tailored to serve the specific needs of LGBTI people. For example, the hugely successful Re-Wired therapeutic group is for men who have sex with men and want to better manage their methamphetamine use and mental health. And launched in late 2015, the acclaimed online resource TouchBase provides information, support and services relating to alcohol and other drugs for the LGBTI community.
The organisations listed have kindly sponsored the APSAD Sydney 2016 Conference. Sponsorship is offered as an unconditional grant.
