FINALIST 1 : GISBORNE DISTRICT COUNCIL - FINANCIAL BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE (FBI)
AUCKLAND 1

Financial Business Intelligence (FBI) is a decision support system that has allowed Gisborne District Council (GDC) to have smarter and easier financial management and statutory reporting and a much better understanding and ownership by staff of their financial data. It has provided GDC with the ability to focus on financial key indicators and trend information for better decision making and have a consistent treatment and presentation of financial information/data. FBI has shifted the focus of the finance function away from transactional processing to value added decision support across the organisation.
10:55 am - 11:25 amMACHINE TO MACHINE
AUCKLAND 3 & 4
Scott Pollard, Business Segment Operations Manager – Machine to Machine, Vodafone New Zealand Ltd

Growing populations present growing challenges.  The Internet of Things is transforming how we live and how we work.  From fridge thermostats to cars and cities, everything around us is getting connected.

Machine to Machine technology presents some real life solutions to challenges such as traffic, pollution and public safety.  But what will this mean for your city and your life?
FINALIST 2: AUCKLAND COUNCIL - GEOSPATIAL FUTURE MODE OF OPERATION (GFMO)
AUCKLAND 1

The Project-GFMO Geospatial services are considered a core function for enabling Auckland Council to meet its vision and objectives. The majority of the business has highlighted that it receives benefits via time savings, increased productivity, increased communication and support to decision making by using the Geospatial team and its applications. Below are the services that the Geospatial Team provide. However the current state of the eight geospatial environments and its existing processes is unsustainable and isn’t delivering to internal and external customers’ expectations. The solution is for Auckland Council to invest in the transition to a Geospatial Future Mode of Operation (GFMO). This Business Case for GFMO proposes to improve the operational performance of the Geospatial services for the Council and create an innovative environment to deliver efficient and effective tools that the Council wide business requires.
11:30 am - 12:00 pmDIGITAL DISRUPTION - NOT BUSINESS AS USUAL
AUCKLAND 3 & 4
Brett Casson, Infrastructure Development - APAC, Autodesk

We are poised at the beginning of a new wave of technology that is disrupting designers and engineers from around the world. Underpinning all of this technology is data, and the importance of not only the data, but living and working in a connected environment. The way in which we capture this data is also changing. The ubiquitous nature of data capture technology will mean that design, construction and survey will be able to deliver a more detailed and immersive environment faster than ever before. This session will discuss how buildings and infrastructure will be captured, designed and constructed, and the technology trends that will radically transform the way in which today and tomorrow’s engineers will design, create and operate by moving construction delivery into a new era.

AUCKLAND 1
Hastings District Council has been providing property information to its customers for many years. This has been through applications such as the Rating Information Database (RID) and its GIS mapping solution, both via the internet. In addition to this, customers have been able to view other property information (plans, consents and other general correspondence) by a kiosk style operation in its Customer Service Centre.

TRANSPARENT BUT RESPONSIBLE SECURITY: A CASE STUDY
AUCKLAND 1

Hutt City Council rolled out a Wifi solution across its libraries to provide customers with internet access. We examine how they did this with minimal administrative overheads, while being able to maintain an effective security posture and how risks were mitigated.
2:20 pm - 2:50 pmLINKED DATA IN LOCAL GOVERNMENT
AUCKLAND 3 & 4
Adrienne Bonnington, Senior Environmental Information Analyst, Horizons Regional Council

There is an increasing demand for local authorities to integrate heterogeneous data sources for the purpose of sharing data at a national level.  Traditionally, this has been achieved through proprietary data management and systems, which is fraught with difficulties. Linked data is an approach for integrating and interlinking data and information resources with minimal impact on organisations.  This presentation describes a local government linked data framework, supported by standards and best practice, to enable local authorities to become linked open data enterprises.
INFORMATION SECURITY: ARE WE ACTUALLY ABLE TO LEARN?
AUCKLAND 1
Tony Krzyżewski

Tony started auditing local authority systems for information security vulnerabilities in 1994 and asks the question why, after all these years, why he is still seeing the same basic errors in system management. This problem is not unique to New Zealand local authorities which leads him to believe that there has to be a systematic failure. In this presentation Tony will highlight the fundamental errors still being observed and what you as a Information Systems Manager need to do to reduce the risk to information system resources.
2:55 pm - 3:25 pmTHE INTERNET OF THINGS - SECURITY & RISK
AUCKLAND 3 & 4
Alisdair McKenzie, IS Assurance Services

Technology Worthy of our Trust

The Internet of Things is here and growing at an ever increasing pace.  It is present in all aspects of our lives as individuals and in our communities at work and at play.  It has the potential to bring us a cornucopia of opportunities for benefits and savings.

It also brings risks which must be recognised and carefully managed to ensure our increasing dependence on technology is not compromised by accidents and malicious attacks from criminals and other bad actors.

This talk will explore the risks which come with the IoT and identify what can and should be done to ensure we maximise benefits and minimise harm.  To round off the talk we will review what is new in the IoT in the last 30 days.

MICROSOFT CITY NEXT: SHAPE THE FUTURE OF YOUR CITY
AUCKLAND 1
Frank Arnold, Regional Public Sector Director, APAC SMS&P, Microsoft

Rapid growth, budget constraints and enhanced citizen services are just a few of the challenges facing cities around the world. Microsoft CityNext uses the latest in Cloud, Big Data, Mobile, and Social technologies as solutions for cities to overcome their challenges.
In this presentation we will give an overview about Microsoft’s CityNext approach. On a concrete example on a New Zealand ISV we will demonstrate integration of Social Listening and usage of geospatial information.

The company has recently won a prestigious European Commission Horizon 2020 innovation grant for its new mobile eGovernment application - the 'HomeHub' - which uses geo-targeted messaging to help engage citizens. ThunderMaps’ Christian Sykes explains some of the trends in European digital government initiatives which have led to the company’s innovation and how the solution will deliver a new service that is set to reach New Zealand shores in 2016.
4:20 pm - 5:05 pmGIS VERSUS IOT - BECAUSE "AND IOT" WOULD BE BORING
AUCKLAND 3 & 4
Peter Fraser, SpatialMedia

In which we review the bleeding edge of GIS; in a world where an Internet of Things is sensing our environment in real time, and reacting in microseconds or sending event streams to be crunched on elastic grids in the cloud, with the intelligence derived being rendered as augmented reality - all while digital fairy dust falls on magical ponies wearing Smartwatches.

All good fun, but where are the practical opportunities?  What can we do that Google can't do better and cheaper?  A mix of geogeek-porn, pulpit thumping and useful ideas.
